Ok so now that i have my sound card, i would like to get a set of 5.1 computer speakers. i dont need bookshelf speakers or anything super fancy. thats what my living room is for. i was looking for something more along the lines of the Logitech x 540 or something of the sort. does anyone have any recommendations on what to get? i was trying to keep costs below 100 dollars

the main ones i have been looking at are the x540, but i dont know how good they are, or if they are even worth it. also if there was a comperable 4.1 system, that would work as well.

or finaly would i be better off getting a nice 2.1 for the price?
such as http://www.alteclansing.com/index.php?file=north_product_detail&iproduct_id=octane_7

Unless you are planning on buying used, $100 won't get you much. It wouldn't have gotten you much in 2001 and today with the dollar worth about 30% less don't expect much.

A 5.1 set costing $100. Good luck. Newegg has one set. A 5.1 set costing $100 worth having, not likely.
Best of luck to you.

ok well how are the logitech x540 speakers? does anyone have any comments on those?
if not what would be a good set of 2.1 speakers to get for around that price. i can go up to 130 ish. i already have a good system in my living room. i dont need audiophile quality.

My ex had those logitech. I didn't really test them out but she had them on a couple times when I was over bumping some music and they held their own.

For a bedroom I hear ya you can make do with anything decent. Save the big bucks for the living area.

Check out here.

or maybe see if you can find a used Klipsch Promedia 5.1 for a good deal.

i'm no audiophile and can't really compare many different systems.

but i just bought the x-540 speaker system last thursday and i really like it. games and music both sound great. I haven't had a chance to really blast it, but it sounds good fairly loud.

if oy dont mind me asking, how loud is loud? would you have to turn them down to have a conversation? the reason i ask is im skeptical that these can put out decent sound with 70 watts total for the system. im worried that if i bought them that they would simply lack sound. my trouble is that i currently have an altec lansing 2.1 system, and the bass is way overpowering for the satellites to the point that i must turn the bass controls nearly off and turn the treble all the way up to make them sound good.

also it could be that im spoiled by the speakers in my living room now.... but still i dont want to give up on looking for a new computer system

There are speakers that can play 10 times louder than the X-540s with 1 watt of power...there's too many factors in performance to be put into 1 statistic. It's as useful as comparing horsepower between two cars to figure out which one will do a faster quarter mile.

You'd get better sound out of a set of 2.1 speakers for the $100 then the x-540 at that price. I have the x-540 and am currently looking into upgrading to some z-5500's from Logitech. A lot more than $100 but if you want good 5.1 computer audio there just aren't many options (let alone good options) out there.

yea i know. i was originaly looking at those but i really dont have 300 right now to drop on speakers. i just need some suggestions of something to look at. so far all ive got is criticism about my choices or "good luck". the only speakers i know are a good deal are the 5500s

The Z-5500s are a good deal if you can get them under $150 used. Even though these did sell for ~$180 six years ago, but these days there's not much out there for PC audio.

Check eBay - I've seen Logitech & other similar brands go for under $50 for computer 5.1 - 7.1 speaker sets.

But for a regular surround sound system, I know Walmart has some mediocre RCA 5.1 system with optical input. Its around $100, and for a small room, it will get the job done.

I took our 600W Onkyo 5.1 Surround sound system for my computer - but thats closer to $3-500

for that price range, go 2.0 or get some a decent pair of headphones.
