Due to demands at work, taking up college, and some personal issues, I have been away for some time now. I have watched my freefall through the ranks around 40ish. It is frustrating to make over 100KPPD and be going backwards, but I suppose it is what it is, and every point counts.
The heat of the summer forced me to shutdown some of my hardware. Yesterday I retired a GTX460 and replaced it with a R9 270X, which proved to be a solid move. A bit of overclocking and I made it from a base of 1050 to 1175 (it seems people can get them up to 1200, but I have not pushed that hard yet) and the card is making 60KPPD.
Also it dawned on me that my pair of GTX570s are a bit long in the tooth, as they are essentially GTX480s that had their thermal issues fixed. I'm not sure what to do with these, and might just run them as is this winter and look at replacing them next fall after I shut them down for the summer.
On two of my machines I still run the v6 linux client in a VirtualBox VM, as that was the best way to make the most points out of a CPU under windows. Does this still apply, or does v7 in native windows work just as good?
Do you guys have any other tips.
And a big hello to all you old timers here.

Keep running your machines in a VB, takes up less cycles on the cpu than just giving it a full wack of OS.

Nice move to the 270x, I personally plan on picking up a 280x in a year or so (or equivalent by than).

And welcome back!

My son got a R9 270x last week, so around the end of the month (when it gets colder) I'll light that one off too.

Hey bud.

Some old timers are still running around. Me, I'm just getting back myself.

Thanks for the help !

As some of you have read in past posts, I am career military. My current plans have me retiring in just under a year and a half. Based on that impending date, I have been rapidly pursuing my bachelor's degree in the time that I have off work. It can be challenging to work 9-11 hours a day and do two college courses on free time. My participation in random stuff on the internet has been curtailed quite a bit. I should have that degree late summer next year if all goes well.

It's hard to believe that I have been folding for almost 9 years now. At least that is my recollection as I think I started early '05.

Welcome back. I've had a life change too which has curtailed a large chunk of my hardware temporarily. Good to see you jumped on some new GPUs. I'll probably do the same once re-established. Fold on, Fold [H]ard ...

Nothing like new hardware to point out the critical weakness in a rig. After a week of folding, gamma started to have video driver error and would occasionally be shutdown for no apparent reason. The only thing new to the rig was that R9. I noted the only weak thing in that rig was the Antec PSU. I swapped the Antec 540W (blech) PSU with the Corsair CX500 from Alpha. Gamma is up and folding with an even higher OC on that R9, now its steady around 90KPPD (CPU SMP-7 + R9). The Antec PSU gave me fits trying to get Alpha restarted, but Delta is CPU only, eventually it got restarted and is currently folding as well.
I think I am in the market for a new PSU, was thinking of going halfsies with my son and getting his rig a CX800 or something so he could upgrade to Crossfire R9s if he wanted.
