So right now I have a x99 5820k setup and a friend is buying it from me more than i paid for the parts. So the question is what do I build now? I'm wanting to pocket some money as the system was more than I needed after using it for a while.

I have been looking at maybe doing a dual socket 1366 setup but open to suggestions.
 
The first question you need to answer is what are you doing with your system?

Second, what's your actual budget for your new build?

And was the only reason you parted with the last one the fact that your friend offered you greater than retail price?

Also, think about it this way. Think of the labor you put in to build the system. Now divide the difference between the part prices and what you got from your friend by the hours spent. That's your hourly rate. More or less than minimum wage?

Now, a dual 1366 is INTERESTING, but it's essentially an obsolete system.
And if you're going to go dualies, why go dualies with an obsolete hardware spec.

Why not dual 2011v3?

Then again, once you have dualies, what're you going to DO with it.
 
i play guild wars 2 and bad company 2 are about it for games. The rest are visual studio,ollydbg, and IDA pro for programming. The rest would just be web browsing.

I was hoping to keep the budget around 400 dollars or so. The x58 platform seemed like a lot of fun to do tweaks and mods too. I have noticed a really overclocked x58 platform xeon can perform about like the 5820k.

I figure with 400 as the budget I pocket some cash and get something more in line with what I need. The cost of my time doesn't matter I scrap/repair electronics all the time for fun so that makes the server boards etc more interesting even if an older platform.
 
The only overclockable dual 1366 is the EVGA SR-2 and they cost a small fortune. 400-500 if you can find one.
You can get a used Supermicro dual 1366 and a couple x5660 all for around 220-250$
You will need six sticks of memory six sticks of Samsung 2gb will run another 60$ or so.
Most, but not all are not ATX so they don't just go in just any case. Mind running it open on a board?
The hexcore x56xx can be had cheap. Check Craigslist see if you can score a cheap x58 board.
I got an EVGA FTW3 for 60$

Why not just build a system with a i5-4690K Have a micro center near you? They have great combo deals.

Yeah dude, I would stay away from x58 systems anymore. They are getting to the age where you'll likely be chasing gremlins as parts age and start to break, taking most of the fun out of owning a "new" one.

Buying new would be the best recommendation I could give you.
 
Should have just kept the X99 setup, otherwise, go with 1150 I guess.
