looking at getting new BTX heatsink

i have a gateway 820GM with a P4 3.2GHz cpu and a btx heatsink. i was looking at getting a new one to make it run cooler and last longer.

i saw that and was wondering if going from a 120mm fan intake to a 90mm fan intake would have a negative impact.

or...

should i just re-seat the heatsink and apply some AS5 instead of whatever crap gateway put on it?

or...

should i just buy a regular LGA775 hsf and put it on there?

it idles in the 50s and load is around 60-62.

any suggestions/help is greatly appreciated.
 
At 55dba, that heatsink will be VERY loud, were talking super delta style loud here, its a case of if you can even stand that noise level :p

If your current heatsink/intake already uses 120mm fans, then you should maybe look into getting a faster/thinker 120mm fan for it. This will give you more airflow and still wont be as loud as that thing. Depends though, ive never checked into BTX heatsinks before :p.
 
well, it has a 4 pin connector, so my mobo would control it.

i actually did buy new fans, and their rpm topped out at 1500 and they weren't the quietest. even with it running at constant 1500, it still went into the 60's. i just put the intake stock one back in because its pwm controlled and it's max rpm is 2500. the out take i left in there, led 120mm and i let my antec psu control that one. i dusted the heatsink and it didn't change much. wierd, i don't remember it ever getting this hot. i just installed speed fan and am running it at life 1400rpm and when the temp starts going into the upper 50s, it revs up to like 1600 or 1700+ to cool it down. when i don't use speedfan, the fan idles at 800rpm and when it the temp hits 60, it's rpm is 1400.

so, should i stick to speedfan or look into getting a new hsf?

or...

can i find a large heat pipe heat sink and just using my 120mm fan with duct to guide air over that?
