Are you just looking to fold with it or actually play games on it? If you intend to play games there are better cards for the money.

this will be for my Dorm room box which right now is just a folding machine made from hot deals but could very well turn into nice gaming rig, but right now i am looking at it's 10Kppd folding potential!

when my lazy ass gets around to it i plan to sell my old iPhone for the funds for the GX2:D

That's what I was curious about. Is the 9800GX2 a better folding card than newer Geforce GTX 280 cards or is it that the 9800GX2's can be had so cheaply that makes them attractive?

Imagine 2 folding cards in 1 package for over 10k PPD. A GTX 280 can do up to 8500-9000 at most and it's a stretch.

Well that answers that question. I guess its' time to sell my 9800GX2 that I have sitting around.
 
I need some advice :)

I'm kinda' on the same topic. I'm also a little interested in a 9800GX2 (I have a 8800GS, a 8800GT and a 9600GSO), but my mobos only have one GPU slot each). I'm curious if the biggest PSU I have (EMACS 600w) would be safe enough to power a 9800GTX2 GPU card (I mean safely, no strain). Would I be better of just getting a mobo with 2x GPU slots and load it with the best combination of the 3x GPU cards I have :confused:

These boxen are primarily used for DC'ing. I might "surf" or check email on them, mostly on a E6600+ 9600GSO I have. I don't usually interupt my 2x quads (Q6600's) folding GPU2 and WCGing.) :D

Edit: The reason I'm wondering is I have a Q6600, 2GB RAM, OC'ed to 3.0 Ghz (9x333), WC'ed (MCP350 stock top, MCR220 rad, 2x D12SH12 fans on a speed controller pulling air through the rad), a PNY 8800GT with the shaders OC'ed to 1809, cooling fan constant 80% and at the wall, with a Kill-o-watt meter, it reads about 280w. Is this too high :confused: Both Q6600's (the other with a EVGA 8800GS, shader OC' to 1788) at the wall the reading for both is about 505 watts. How much do you think swapping out the PNY 8800GT and replacing it with a 9800GTX2 would increase the wattage? :confused: It and my other quad are on a TrippLite 850 battery backup PSU I purchased on fleabay and installed new batteries for and I don't want to overload it. (according to spec the max watt draw is 680w, I think) The other Q6600 has idential WC'ing, but only has a EVGA 8800GS, shader OC' 1788, fan constant to 80% and a CPU OC' of only 2.93 (mobo?) I know the GPU card shaders and the quads FSB's could be OC'ed higher, but I don't want to "baby sit" them and they're doing fine in the PpD amount. I only want about 10k PpD and I'm getting about 15k PpD with FAHmon v2.3.2b on the boxen and about 13k on the [H]ard stats. :p

Not sure on the PSU, but 600W should be enough to do a single GX2. I am also looking at the GX2 (as others are). I'm looking at 2 x GX2 on a Corsair TX750. According to Kendrak & ROC, it can handle two easily and possibly 3.

I've got a lonely PCIe slot that needs filled in my uber boxen :cool:

 
If it's not uber cheap, then it'll probably be able to hang fine.

Hey thanks capreppy, I just now read your post. I'm not sure about the PSU either, I do know it's not a "uber cheapo" (I think it was like $80 some bucks originally, I purchased it about 2x years ago, it's very heavy and according to some reviews I read before I purchased it, it's a quality PSU) I figure if 600w is able to handle a GX2 for Kendrak & ROC, my PSU should be able to do it (I know they were talking a Corsair TX750, but were referring to 2x GX2's) My primarily concern was to not strain the PSU causing early failure, erratic current, added heat and maybe even damage the boxen. (hardware, HD's, CPU, GPU, etc)

Since it's not an uber cheap PSU, you'll probably be good to go. I agree checking first is a good idea before it decides take everything down with it :)
 
So, the GX2 is the card of choice for Folding? I have a 8800gts (512) that I might be upgrading to a GX2 for about $150.
