If Longhorn is going to have a new rendering engine (WGF), does this mean that all current games will not work with Longhorn? After all, just about every game in existance requires SOME form of DirectX, and yet it would seem Longhorn is ditching DX in favor of WGF. Right?

I believe WGF is just DirectX 10, so my guess is it will be backwards compatible to an extent (they would probably drop support for DX7 games and lower).

it will just set new standards with most of the old standards still in place. i could be wrong.

WGF is DX repackaged and renamed

its backwards compatible like DX9 allows you to play DX5, 6, 7, 8 games etc....

u gotta think of how dumb it is to just delete every game made from the end of 2005 and back, of course u will be able to play em on longhorn

LOL. obviously...

My guess is...

Windows Graphical Front-End?

My money's on the Windows Grahpical (or graphics)...the F i have no idea..

I haven't read that much about Longhorn, though, of course if it is radical enough a structural change you will not be able to play current games without emulation. I know they are going to introduce a new file system, but it will presumably be backwards compatible.

Nevertheless, I don't trust M$ to make such much-needed radical changes and instead rely more on backwards compatibility. I think you can count on being able to play your games.

WinFS won't be included in Longhorn when it launches. I'm sure that DXDiag will still be in there and report WGF or DXNext or whatever you want to call it as being DirectX 10.x.
