i'm just thinking about leaving my computer on for three weeks while i'm away in boston. so i'm just wondering what's the longest you left it on (with out even touching it) and came back without a problem.
 
One at work has been running for 392 weeks. My home comp has been running for 47 days.

I was going to leave it on while I went to vacation to Florida for a week, but I had a scary dream that I came home and the house was smoldering rubble, so I decided against it.

Why would you even want to leave it on for three weeks if you aren't going to be there to use it, or have it set up to do tasks? Seems like a waste of electricity to me. Well, unless you're F@H or something.

I leave my current system on, at the most, all night without touching it. But, I find a reason to restart at least once a day on average, so I don't have any issues.
 
ouh i should download folding at hoem for while i'm gone... i think i'll underclock it to 1.1ghz though... just cause.
 
My server has been up forever, as long as I can remember (which isnt saying much). I always leave my main box running.

You shouldn't need to underclock it if it's stable, just run all the parts at stock.
 
137 days. however i dont use that computer, i just have it on running seti. i closed out all the background stuff so it only had a few things running. it would have gone alot longer but i accidently restarted it a few weeks ago.

for my main pc, day in and day out usage ive gone 29 days before i was forced to restart by installing something.

i go about 1-2 weeks without restarting.
 
bout a week, but I would trust it indefinitely, I have a UPS on it set to shut it down when the lectricity goes out or surges or sags
 
A week also. I always end up rebooting for one reason or another. Usually when installing new drivers.
 
It all depends when a new critical Windozes patch comes out.
Between them my boxen dont get rebooted.
Unless the power goes out.

My main desktop gets rebooted everyday

Samba Server: P233mmx 98mb ram 2gb hdd mandrake 10.0 was running for 1 month till I moved the servers around.


File server: P150mmx 64mb ram 4gb,2gb,2gb win95b was running for 6 months till I did the same thing as above.
 
the longest i left is 3 days without touching it. this was when i had regents to study for.
 
my webserver has been on for about 2 months now with no problems. and my main computer is never shut down for more that half an hour or so (transporting it to lans :)) when i do turn it off it is just to restart.

you should be fine leaving it on
 
about 4 moths, for a pc I usually use every day. I try to restart as little as possible, becasue when I install new hardware or mess with my oc's, I end up rebooting like 15 times in a row (most recently when I flashed my BIOS and it stopped just after it deleted my old BIOS...that one took a while to fix)

I have to agree that leaving it on for no reason seems like something of a waste. Unless you're expecting msgs or downloading or seeding, I would just turn it off.
 
I'm guessing about 120 days (4 months roughly) on my main box. This was about a year ago. Nowadays I'm lucky if I get a week :rolleyes:
 
with all the spring storms ... I shut them off before going to work ... boot times are not that long anyways ...
 
i dont get huge amounts because i always upgrade something, or decide to mod something, but the longest I remember is a little over 30 days. i never willingly shut it down and im on a UPS now, and it never ever crashes. at work the record for my comp was 56 days, 44 minutes, and 16 seconds, and i only had to restart because SOMEHOW, i have NO idea how, but I got popup ads on it. Plus I was 6 virus definition updates behind.
 
When I was on Windows 2000, about six weeks. (Shutting down for an at-home weekend from school.) On XP, now, my max uptime is only about a week or two. :(
 
A few months ago, I had it on for about four months. Lately, I have no side panels on my case so I have been making sure that it gets turned off.

Personally, I wouldn't leave my rig on forever, unless there's a damn good reason for it. The fans are quite loud, and are drowned out by my HD497s when I'm wearing them, but I don't sleep well with it on all night. Stability testing, AV, defragmenting, WinRAR, file transfers, servers... All good reasons. Most other things (DC excluded here) like leaving it on to rack up a good uptime are just a waste of electricity.
 
Mine's basically been on since I built in the latest mods, which was February. I restart every now and again when intalling or uninstalling something, but generally I just leave it on. I'm in and out a lot and having to wait for a comp to load annoys me so it's easier to just leave on. I'll load up games, dvd's, whatever else then shut them down and just let it run. I restarted 4 days 17 hours and 50 minutes ago to put a new HD in but that only took ~30 mins. to ghost the old one and put the new one in. I've left it on for ~3 days while out of town before, mostly cause I had torrents going and other macro's set to go.
 
My uptime right now is 685 Hours 41 Minutes and counting :)

PS I need to run a windows update, restart and defrag tho :p
 
:-\ I once had my computer on for 12 hours.
Think thats the longest I left it on. Not for stability and stuff.. I just dont like it on at night, although im sure it can finish a lot of stuff during that time.
 
my linux box got up to 220 days without a reboot, then I lost power for 5 minutes, and it came back up and did another 78 days.
 
:D all I can say is not to leave it on if you don't trust your system fans or PSfan... no point in coming home to a computer that is a melted ball...

you've gone 7 1/2 years without installing any software that needs a restart? and can windows 95 or whatever operating system you would have had 7 1/2 years ago really stay stable for that long? i remember having to restart every week because of crashes.
 
Why would anyone want to turn off their systems? I mean dont you just love it when you get home and just sit and work/play. I have a laptop as main system and server and never turn them off. Also I only run Intel as I just to do this with amd and they would die.

When I get home, I run upstairs and turn on the computer. Then, I get a drink and go to the bathroom. By that time, the system has booted.
 
Longest I've left my computer go without me touching it is 10 days because I left for break after one of my school's quarters. My current one's record is only about 2 weeks without powering down; my old dell has gone about 2 months without one.

Longest time my comp has been on? 9 Days... It's lighted, has a window, and is in my Room, and sleeping with the noise of Fans isn't bad, but with your room illuminated is, coupled with the sound, I sometimes cover it up, but then im afraid i will wake up and it will be a melted ball of goo.

Longest time I've ever spent on the computer without leaving (not even for bathroom or drink etc...) is about 28 hours. Then i was piss tired, i went to bed(after just about falling asleep while going potty), after taking a picture of myself (Looked like death, you could see where my hand pushed up my hair, and the huge bags below my eyes. This was accomplished with a bottle of Caffeine pills bought from walmart for $8 or somethin... It was worth it :D
 
I think the longest I've sat a computer is about 43 hours over the span of two days without getting a wink of sleep. This was during crunch time in A term; taught me not to put two big programming projects on hold till the last 2 days of school.

yeah you see everyone in the world doesnt run windows. This one is running HP-Unix and I didnt even know it was in the server room untill I was checking asset tages. It didnt have one. I asked how long it had been there and a guy that has been there for 10 years said about 7, I used vnc and it said 392 weeks then. I have no idea what its running as I was told to leave that one alone. For all I know its the bosses pr0n server he set up years ago.

Um. No.

Anyway, ever hear of Opterons? Or AthlonMP? Plenty of servers built on those have some mad uptime.

Hell, there are plenty of AthlonXP desktops with mad uptime.

Blame software, not CPUs.
 
I start my machine every day around 8:30am (about when I get up :D ) until around 4:00pm. she then gets started up again around 8:00pm until around midnight. I see no need in having her run all night long so she doesnt.

why waste electricity when you dont need to?
