Long time SLI user impressed with Crossfire

I havent been in the ATI camp since the 9800XT days.. but with Conroes release I picked up a couple parts to build a 6700 Conroe based system and an X1900XT master and X1900XTX slave card..

It was just as easy if not easier to install than my various SLI systems have been and for the most part on this Asus 975X motherboard seems very stable and fast.

I dont have any issues with the external "dongle" since on all of my SLI systems I would periodically get the SLI has been disabled since "the bridge isnt connected" message which would involve a shutdown and opening my case to reseat the SLI bridge.

Anyway.. good to see ATI still has awesome IQ (something I noticed right away after gaming for a few hours in a couple games)

I would like to see ATI get rid of the whole Master/Slave card thing.. one should be able to simply pick up 2 ATI vidcards and go..

I hadn't heard that tidbit yet. Got a link? I assume by next card series they mean R600?
 
No master card from R600 on. Crossfire circuitry (IIRC) will be incorporated into the core.
 
Good, I think I'm done with the SLi stuff, I would like to jump the bandwagon and go ATI X-fire this time. I just hope they offer a 1GB DDR4 card! That would be very nice for those ULTRA high res'es :D
 
wow - this is so me also.. I have been using SLI for over a year now and am taking the leap to CF... my master card comes tomorrow.. I am building this on the MSI 975x board... glad to hear you like your setup.. I am looking forward to seeing mine in action! :D

Well thats certainly good news, I'm sure that will make reselling cards much easier. I wonder what's next? Replacing the dongle with a SLI-esque GPU bridge? Doubt it. :p

One thing I am sure of though, RD600 + R600 + Conroe = my build later this year. :D

No need to doubt, it's already happened.

That's a pic of the x1950 Pro, so I'm guessing the r600 will have the same thing. A double bridge though, just to keep crossfire and sli different. :p

...re: post #9 - so is one side of the bridge for sending and the other recieving data? kind of strange they would have two bridges, unless they were for different data paths.. or something.

From what I read, it was picked mostly to keep it different from the single bridge sli, though I could be completely wrong on that.
 
ok, yeah I saw your comment on that... well, it's all good.. as long as it works well! :)
 
I tried SLI for awhile .(7800GT's) and it worked ok ..but i kept getting the Bridge not connected error as well and i just got overly annoyed with it and said screw it. I just bought a 1900XTX and plan to get the 1900 Crossfire in about a month along with a intel core 2 duo board and CPU. I noticed right off the bat that the IQ was better as well . Not sure how ATI pulls it off but there IQ is always better than Nvidia's
 
huh - I never once ever got that message.. I didn't know it existed. You must have had some dirty contacts or something..
