long term effects from + fanspeed?

I have a 6950 2GB and never really messed with the fan speed, I noticed playing some games on max tend to get the temperatures up to the upper 70C. Are there any negatives to turning up the fanspeed, around 40-50%? It seems to like to stay around 35% or so when gaming, but running at 45% really takes the temperatures down.
 
I'm no expert, but my fathers folding machine in the garage has a gtx260 that's been running 100% fan speed for a few years without any noticable damage. At the very least after extended use their would be some annoying rattling.
 
I would say upper 70's are fine, but ramp up if ur more comfortable with lower temps.

... and negatives? yeah - wear, oxidation.. WTF man. If the fan is that retarded, which I doubt, u'll just get another.

70 is low especially under load. But its not the gpu that's normally the hotbox its the ram.

If I understand this correctly, you just said it's not the GPU that's hot it's the RAM?
That makes absolutely no sense and is wrong. The GPU core itself produces an ton more heat than the RAM.

If I just misunderstood, please correct me.
 
The main reason they throttle the fan down is to keep the noise down. It also helps with wear/tear and slight power usage.

Worst case if you keep it 100%: Your case is noisy and fan goes bad.

I would rather replace a $2 fan than a $200 video card.

Realistically though; your video card will be outdated before your fan gives out.

On my 5850 w/ stock cooler the mem ran <10oC hotter than the core at load. Obviously the memory is not producing as much heat as the core, it's just not cooled as well. Did make me dial up the fan speed a bit, because a cool mid 70s on the core meant mid 80s for the memory.
