I'm kinda browsing the intel processors right now. I've honestly never owned one so I know NOTHING about them, and I also know nothing about dual core processing, so please bare with me.

Why does a single core 3.0 ghz chip cost so much less than a dual core chip that is rated at like 1.6 so much more. yes, I understand it has two cores.. but is it that much more efficient?

even documentation on this stuff would be nice so I can read about it. thanks!
 
Keep in mind that now more than ever, clock speed doesn't mean much at all. By those standards, my 2.66B overclocked to 3.0 ghZ would be one killer CPU - where, in reality, 1.86 ghZ chips are completely killing min.
 
Some processor architecture is just naturally faster then others and can perform more calculations per clock cycle then older architectures. So in the previous posters case his older P4 has a higher clock speed, but because it is based on a different core architecure performs slower then the new Core 2 Duo (Conroe) architecture.
