LOL 'ole 5.25 drive...

Just got an old machine to work on here, it has an old(dead) 5.25 HDD in it... only the second I've seen... whacky stuff.... anyone want to buy it to put it in a HDD museum?? :D

Let me guess a big foot drive? Compaq use to use them all the time.
 
I remember the old Quantum Bigfoots. I had a 6.4GB ages ago, damn slow drive.
 
Just imagine what kind of capacities we could have if we were still using 5.25" HDDs... sure, they'd be rather slow, but for storing large files such as video they'd be great :)


(or 8" HDDs... :eek: )
 
Dude QJ! I remember those and the 5.25 floppy drives. I remember playing where in the world is carmen sandiego.
 
It's a 4.3GB Bigfoot...

Why'd they ever make these things anyhow?? THe first HDD I ever saw(10MB) was only 3.5(albeit it was about 2 inches thick)

And the first HDD I owned(107MB Seagate, which still runs even though it's 15yrs old) looks like a modern HDD.

P.S. If HDD's lasted nowadays like they used to(at least my old one) I'd be happy....

Beh I use to have a hard drive that went in an isa slot. It was like 30 megs I think. I got it so I would not loose my dual 5.25 drives. Ahh those were the days. Up untill a few years ago I had some 7 inch floppies around here but lets not go into that....
 
I remember the ISA controllers, but never a HDD that actually mounted in the ISA slot... whacky stuff....

maybe in few years, all drives will become 2.5" just like we changed from 5.25" to 3.5".

Personally, I can't wait for 1" HDDs to become the new standard. Just imagine something like 50 1" HDDs stacked vertically and horizontally in some kind of bizarre RAID configuration :eek:
 
I have a few external 1GB 5.25" Full height SCSI drives... (the size of TWO CD-Rom drives)

They are kind of fun.. turn them on, wait for them to spin up, then they Ding to let you know they are up to speed, and finally you can turn on your computer.
