i'm lookin for a deal on a set of logitech z-5500 speakers. can anyone help me? would be great to get them for around $200!

Why do you want them? They aren't very good compared to what you could get for just bit more. Do you need 5.1?

Listen to me now or cry about it much later.

You don't want a cheap 5.1 pc setup.

I know why. I have been there done that and have a bunch of lessons learned.

Get yourself a pair of good headphones if you want to be pro.

A cheap pair of headphones owns a cheap 5.1 all day.

Reasons are plenty but the bottom line is that headphones will give you max data on what is going on in game. You might think that the 5500s are leet but trust me they have tons of big gaping holes in their sound reproduction.

Spend $34 on some JVC HA-RX700s first and then see if you still want to spend $200 + on the 5500s.

Oh and with the $$ you have left over you can buy a dayton or Bic subwoofer for some REAL bass. Nothing kicks it like some headphones and a good sub.

i need speakers because i live in a college setting. my computer monitor is my tv and also my place to use my ps3 and xbox360. i watch tv and blu-rays with friends and my room mates alot and speakers r essential. i want 5.1 because of gaming and my movies. i have a 5.1 setup now but i'm unable to utilize the surround sound because its only the PC green/black/orange 3.5mm input (which is not good for my xbox or ps3)

Lol, the only reason I open "Logitech Z5500" threads anymore is to read Spaceman's posts on the subject.

Like rolling that rock back up the hill every few days, isn't it bro?

I'm with Space on this, but if you're in college, too lazy to put together your own setup, and think you HAVE to have 5.1, then they're not a terrible choice. They're just not great for the money...or the sound. If you don't need 5.1, then I'm sure he can recommend you a nice 2.0 or 2.1 setup within a $200 budget.

PS- Speaking personally, I wouldn't underestimate a pair of over the ear headphones like the Koss SB40s for dampening the sound of roomates and random partying, either.

Logitech = horrible sound quality

Many other speakers = good sound quality

Giving budget and other parameters so that we can help with better recommendations = good

Checking out some of the HUNDRED BAGILLIN KATRILLION other threads that have recommendations for good speakers = DEAR GOD WHY DON'T PEOPLE LOOK THINGS UP FIRST?!?!

Please take a gander through these threads and then give us that budget and other requirements.

200 isn't much to work with. I'd use Craigslist and find an HTiB and be done with it.

The Z-5500s aren't bad, they're versatile, although the SPDIF mode sucks ass due to sync latency. The Z-680 was better in that regard, but the Z-680 had a crappy pre-amp unit in the decoder that caused massive hissing. There's no middle ground.

Sure they're not bad. If they cost like.... $40. You could get waaaay better audio quality for the money. Compare these to a Swan D1080MKII? No comparison, actually. Lol. Also, the Swans are cheaper, if their price hasn't gone up.

Dude, if you can live with 2.1 get the Swan M10s.

They get great reviews, will only set you back like $130 after shipping, they look/sound sexy and they're the perfect size for a college room, imo. They were off the market for awhile b/c Swan thought they could do better, but now they've realized the error of their ways.

I actually finished setting up my Z5500s a few hours ago and they really don't sound that much better than my old Boston Acoustics 4.1 setup; probably because they both use the all-in-one driver for the satellites. The subwoofer; while louder than the Boston's, was pretty muddled and was playing frequencies it probably shouldn't have been playing.

Simply put, they suck for music, but sound pretty decent for games which is going to be their primary use anyway and the only reason why I wanted 5.1 in the first place. If wanted sound quality for my music, I'd drive my car. :D

Man.

Ok. I understand the need for speakers now. If you are using multiple digital sources i.e the PS3, 360, etc, then the Z5500s don't really help much. The BluRay really messes things up due to the sync issues. Man. Tough one.

You really need a receiver for the multiple inputs and better decoding and sync for movies especially.

I really encourage you to look to craigslist for a recent Pioneer, Yamaha, or Onkyo(don't really like those but they work) and a pair of decent sized bookshelves with at least a 6 1/2 driver.

The sound will dominate the Z5500 with just two speakers and I am certain you can find a sub for under $100 eventually if you keep it local.

Hook it up. Impress the ladies with your sound!

thanks for all the help guys. if it helps my budget as of now is in the 200 range. right now i have the x540s and they're alright. but since the inputs are only PC surround i cant use it for much. so i have all 5 set up in front of me in matrix mode. they sound good at about 50% volume but once i get higher it loses quality. i guess id be happy with a 2.1 setup if it really sounded good. but id also want sum kind of 5.1 solution. i used to have a 5.1 headset i think it was something like an x360 (made by tritron? i forget) but they were uber heavy and i cudnt move my head @ all without them falling off. they eventually fell apart. they sounded nice when i had them though. i think they cost 100. that was about 2 years ago though. have there ben any advances in 5.1 headsets? cuz the 5.1 with that air tight closeness that blocked out EVERYTHING around me was soooo immersive!

Edit: also i fear getting used speakers due to the lack of care people may give to them. i wouldnt want to get a unit on craigslist or ebay because a speaker my be blown out or it could be right on the edge of going. there might be horrible static from who knows what. its just too risky for me. and im on a tight budget due to college. i cant make a mistake thats gunna cost me $200 without a warranty or some kind of guarantee

Are you going to have future income? You can buy quality 2.1 or 2.0 setup right now and slowly build to 5.1. It's what I'm doing.

"Hook it up. Impress the ladies with your sound!"

Oh sure, the old "take 'em home and show 'em your equipment ploy.

Reminded me of the Italian Job, when the guy buys speakers so powerful they blow the clothes off chicks.

I'm pretty sure it would cause permanent physical damage before removing her clothes. That's probably not a turn on.

Also, it's not like sound waves will unbutton blouses. Your best bet would be if it knocked them off their feet and sent them tumbling end over end, which may remove a few articles.

Again...not likely to leave them in an aroused state.

I can help you pntballer669. I have two complete, damn near perfect Z-5500s for sale in the factory box. I think we can work with your budget. The only thing you may have to do get is some speaker wire. Email me when you pick this up: buyerforhire@windstream.net. You may have enough money leftover to buy a case of paint and play all day.
