This is going to sound odd but I've been having trouble with my sub-woofer. The problem is that the base isn't really working for particular genres of music. When I play something like dubstep then the bass comes through loud and clear, I play some classical music and it barely comes out.

I'm not sure if something is wrong with software or hardware but when I open my Creative Console Launcher and test the sub-woofer nothing comes out but I test it through the THX Setup Console it comes through.

I know its not the volume settings I've checked already and I have googled it already without any help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest disconnecting the soundcard from the Z5500 and reloading the Creative sound card drivers. Then hook it all back up. You might have a corrupted driver.

It does sound odd. Do you have a Zune or iPod/Phone you can connect directly to those speakers? Maybe run a line from your HT/Receiver into it and test some music one of those ways.

Older classical recordings tend to be less than stellar, as well, so source material may be an issue.

Thanks guys, :) I live in the UK so it's pretty late here but I will try it in the morning and let you know!

Classical music isnt really known for bass, though. You get alot of highs but not really deep lows. Try changing the subwoofer volume higher, and that should help some.

And there's nothing wrong with the creative launcher. It just uses white noise instead of a real bass test. However you should get *some* faint white noise from the subwoofer for the sub test. In THX, then you get the nice rumbling bass in the bass test. I had the same thing happen on the Z5500. But there SHOULD be some white noise coming from it at least, which will become more audible as you increase the subwoofer volume.

Nothing to do with the Z5500. When I tested with headphones plugged through optical out to my mixamp, there was barely any audible sound either in the console launcher, but there were nice deep lows in the THX test.

Classical music does not have the sustained bass that you get with modern pop or rock recordings.

As you can see, the bass mainly comes from certain instruments. Classical instruments will dig much deeper than modern rock/pop but the sound level wont be very high.

Ok thanks for the clear up :) I think it may have been the recording as I was listening to Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture and I suppose I was expecting more from the subwoofer with the artillery and percussion bit. :p

I also did a check of my sound-card and one of the cables was loose (I assume it came loose at a point when I was dusting the fan filters) so I put it firmly back into place. I suppose its possible (and sounding more likely) that I was just fooling myself into thinking there was a problem when there wasn't really one.

Thanks for the help anyways!!
