Logitech Z-5500 / Soundcard ?

I currently have an X-Fi, and am looking for some speakers. It seems to me that the Z-5500 is the way to go, but I am just wondering if there is any point getting these if you have a sound card?

For instance, the speakers decode Dolby 5.1 and DTS. So if I am listening to a song, it will play in 5.1? But wasn't this the reason I got my soundcard? So it would play out of all the spekaers (CMSS-3D)?

Wouldn't these decoders etc make my soundcard not used? Also in a game, I would rather have the soundcard decode it than the 5.1.

Another thing that bugs me is the connections for the soundcard are on the back of the SoundTouch control pad. So if I have this in the centre of the table, I am going to have like 4 wires going across the table? Usually they are on the back of the Sub?

I would only be using these speakers for my PC (gaming & music), and nothing else. Are they still worth it?

Any help apprecaited,

Simon

As a happy owner of both an X-Fi Platinum (modded) and the Z-5500 kit, I'd say that none of it is redundant. As that combination is most useful when hooked up though the analogue conectors, since the X-Fi cannot encode 2 channel audio into 5.1 over the digital connectors.

This setup leaves the digital connectors on the Z-5500's free to be used with a compatible games console, hd-dvd or blueray player, digital cable box, or even a second computer. Basically, I'd save the use of the digital connectors on the speakers for a device that outputs Dolby Digital or DTS.

And I'm sure I dont have to tell you that these speakers are great pieces of gear for the price. Setup properly you wont find anything that matches what it offers for anywhere near the same price.

And if you go the analogue route, then think about investing in replacing the opamps, as you canmake the x-fi near prosumer level in terms of audio quality.
