Logitech Z-340 vs X-540

Your link goes nowhere. Wait, nevermind, you fixed it.

Anyway. You're comparing dinky speakers to slightly-less-dinky dinky speakers. The 540s are fairly nice if you're not used to better. Switching away from onboard sound probably won't help you much at this level, maybe you'd prefer to spend the entire budget on something better than the 540s?

Yeah i'm not used to much better and always had 2.1. I'd say my budget is $100 (might go a little more if it's much better) for card and speaker.

I think the Swan M10s are a popular option (if you can find them in stock). If you want 5.1, the X-540s are a pretty good option, but you might be able to find better by spending all $100 on the speakers. Unless your onboard sound lacks certain features you want to get by adding a sound card, you can typically get better sound on that budget by putting it all on the speakers.

Did some reading and decided i'll buy the Swan M10 if Newegg or somewhere else gets them in stock for under $95 shipped. Probably gonna have to wait awhile though :(

Just curious as to how much better sound quality I might get from a swan m10 as I own the logitech z-340 as well paired with an x-fi prelude. Is it worth the price of entry?

A lot. I only have the Swan D1080MKII's, but if they're any indication of Swan's quality, then it's way up there. The sound is very well balanced; the mids, highs, and lows are all there. The sound coming from it is simply amazing; the soundstage is nice, and everything is crisp and clear and has great impact. Also, Dedicated Audio Company > PC/Console Peripheral company.

To TC: Don't get the XtremeAudio. I've heard nothing but bad things about it. The Montego is a good choice since it uses the pretty damn good CMI 8788 chip (which I think is found in mod'd form in the Asus Xonar D2?). However, I've heard that the 8788 has problems in Vista. In XP they're fine though and probably a top choice.
