I dont know if this is the right forum to post this question or not but if Im not please send me to the right way.

Im using the mx518 right now for mostly CSS but Ive heard good things about the G5. Has anyone compared the two that can give me a unbiased opinion on which one is better as in performance, ergonomics, and comfort? I want to jump the gun and buy the G5 but I just want to get the last round of opinions before I buy it. Thanks a million in advance for your help.

If you like the MX518, odds are pretty good you'll like the G5. Ergonomics aren't that different between the two...button placement is.

I recently upgraded, as the higher the DPI, the more I tend to like it. (I miss my Boomslang 2000).

Many people will gripe about there only being 1 thumb button, but I personally only used that 1 button anyway. Usually, rebound to F5.

The thing that sold me on the G5 (well, it was after the fact...but I <3 it more now) vs the 518 was the fact that the scroll wheel, when tilted to the side, could act as the cruise up and cruise down that the 518 lost to sensitivity adjustments.

When I used the MX Series, I NEVER used the App Switch, seldom used the the front thumb button. I always liked the cruise up and down for scrolling through forums. The only thing I don't like is something that SetPoint did away with: the Minimize all setting....and windows key + D isn't something that SetPoint allows me to bind.

Performance in games is perfect.

Is it worth upgrading from the 518 to? Not for 70 bucks...but I got it on sale at Amazon for 55 or so, with the intention of migrating the 518 to the laptop to replace the 510 (which lacks XP x64 drivers). A friend offered me $30 for the 518, which was enough for me to put up with the inability to rebind keys on the 510, especially considering I seldom use it.

Only one thumb button? And a $70 price tag? I really like the dual buttons. I'll pass - for now at least. If it can improve my rail, maybe I can sacrifice.

Not top priority - right now. Post some reviews - especially if you got a skill increase with it. :p

i have the mx510, and my freind has a mx518 & the Razr Chamelion. I personally want the mx610 mouse.

Has anyone compared the mx518 to the G5? I have the Mx518 but should I buy the G5 if Im looking for performance boost or should I just save my cash?

I'd say you won't notice a world of diffreence betwen the 518 and G5. I didn't notice a world of difference from the 510.

What you will notice is that the G5 slides like its on ICE.. Thats becuase they use new material to put on slippery feet.. so its a different feel when moving.

The weight of the g5 and 510 is the same without the weights in the g5... I don't see why anyone would add weights.

The 800DPI of the 518 and 510.. is decent.. and I don't notice any difference except that when I move the mouse it moves the screen faster with the higher DPI.

So I'd say the only difference you will notice is that the feet are suppoer slippery.. almost no resistance when you move the mouse.. its like moving it on ice.. With tracking in games.. you won't notice much difference.

I'd say save your money.

Thanks for all the input. Ive decided to keep the MX518 as I find the swith application to be very useful as I have binded it to close applications. The one factor that made me stay with the 518 was the lack of two side buttons on the G5. I use both buttons often so I the lack of the extra side button steered me away. I guess I was searching for the a little extra oomph in gaming but I think I have found it with the mx518 but I guess Im always searching for that extra kick in my gaming. I think Im content with the 518 for now. Thanks

I have a question regarding the G5 Laser Mouse: how well does it work on one of the "fUNC" pads? My MX1000 worked beautifully on that surface, but now that it's dead (for no apparent reason), I'm looking for a new mouse, preferably corded this time around. ;)

g5 is a nice mouse, on the fly change the dpi.......they weights are kinda pointless its very hella light, and weighed down it does nothing for presision......

the braided cord is nice tho, i likes that

the paint job is just wonderfull i love the paint......... i would trade my g5 for a mx518 only cause i web surf more than game and love the back-forward thumb keys

and you cant even see the lazer, only light you see is from the dpi ummm little man thingy :p

mx1000's have a battery soldered to the curcit.......

and the mx1000 is a lazer mouse

so pictire a mx1000, wired, with full usb bandwith.......and on the fly dpi changes

So, bottom line: a G5 will work just as well, if not more so, than an MX1000 on the fUNC pad. Good to know because I just "Egged" one and it'll be here soon. :)

Thanks for the reaffirmation, Soulsaver. :)

Don't get me wrong. I love the MX1000, but ever since I installed the 81.85 nVIDIA drivers and a new 7800GT card, the mouse no longer is recognized by WinXP. It doesn't even show up in Device Manager. No clue... :(

I am also riding the fence and cant make up my mind to upgrade
from my MX510 to the G5 or even possibly the Copperhead.

If anyone can help get me get on one side or the other, that would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks

MX518 is a TOUGH mouse... why would you replace it? Unless you're playing games for money there's really no point in calling your current mouse obsolete and replacing it with a G5.

I've got an MX1000 and I like it.

The G5 is a good mouse... great precision with a nice solid feel. I like it better than the razor or my old mx510... No issues with games, and the software is even pretty good. I usually do not like Logitech software... anyways. If you're a gamer, it's a very nice mouse.

Only one thumb button!? How will you ever navigate the intarweb!?

I love using those buttons for forward/back. Makes me sad I don't have them at work.

lol - I know... some folks don't like that, but I actually like it... I hit those buttons by accident too much at work, so I like not having... it's one of those things. It's really geared for a gaming rig. not much web browsing design func built in. I would say the mx518 is a better "all around" mouse...
