Logitech MX518 laser????

even with my mx1000 and my diamondback, i can tell the difference. my razer is much more smoother and VERY precise. although i did make my USB port poll @1ms(1000hz :p).
 
yea, haven't cranked up my usb to poll @ 1ms yet.. I'm @ 2ms right now.. wanna get used to it alittle bit more before I do.. trying to adjust from my mx500 to the diamondback was enuff of a learning curve.. then after a few days I read about how to properly set the sensitivity for the diamond back to get full 1600 DPI, how to eliminate the majority of the mouse acceleration (through settings and reg keys), how to get rid of the pixel jitter on the diamondback (only happens at 1600 DPI, and you have to know what to look for), and to increase the polling on the USB port from 8ms to 2ms..

so, I'm re-learning how to use the diamondback again.. and I switched mousepads too from my original ratpad to an icemat rev 2.. so my game is nice and off right now.. not horrible, but I'm still re-learning some stuff.. I'll wait to increase the polling again, once I'm more comfortable with the new setup..

Really? I game heavily and can't use light mice. One of the main reasons I bought an mx1000 was because it was on the heavy side. I've had too many times where a light mouse skittered accross the desk or off it.
 
I just got my MX510 damn lol. Well we all will see if the MX518 will me so much better. And why do they always skip models like why dinin't they go with a MX511 or something of that kind?
 
barnbaby, do you use mouse skates on your DB? I've just heard of hyperglides, and it seems that you can replace the DB feets with it. right now mine are on mouse skates with a FunC mousepad. some people are complaining that they are loosing tracking coz of the added height(0.5mm) , but i dont really feel any different on mine.

oh, and i just did the reg fix, fixed the pixel jitters.
 
I'm using the padsurfers that came with my icemat... much smoother, and haven't noticed a loss of precision.. the tape is so thin, I don't see why there would be a difference..

for the pixel jitter the fix is an update mouclass.sys file.. you can see this issue if you have the windows mouse settings set so the sensitivity is at the default setting (right in the middle), enhance pointer set to off, and the razer driver (if installed) set to 10..

if you move the mouse in one direction then move it in the other (do it REAL slow) it will actually make the pointer skip 1 pixel.. this is caused by the optical sensor ignoring your first movement as to make sure you didn't move the mouse by accident.. this new file will tell it to ignore the first movement.. so, while you have to move the mouse 2 pixels worth in the other direction now, it atleast does not skip the pixel.. this is a problem with the optical sensor in the mouse, and until a new revision comes out, this is the best solution..

haha.... just did the patch :D. doesn't skip now. i actually saw that patch like days ago over at the Razer forums, i think the guy who made that is Atalan, or something. i just didn't bother to do it coz i thought with my USB port poll at 1ms, i wouldn't need it. and i also did the cpl_reg_fix to completely disable pointer accellaration on winxp. damn, now i have the deadliest mouse(no pun intended :p) on the planet. now all i need is the skills to back it up lol hahahaha..........

That is definitely a bad analogy. You're comparing 2 mice that do the same thing to 2 vehicles that serve COMPLETELY different functions. F250s are built for hauling beer, lots and lots of beer. Hell, the bed and trailer both plum fulla beer. The Mustang is meant to haul the collective asses of 2 adults and 2 children/small people.

now unless the mouse has ultra tacky feet or you're trying to use the rubber bottom of your mousepad. The weight of the mouse will have NOTHING to do with precision unless you're flailing the mouse around at eleventy billion miles per hour. At normal mousing speeds there's no difference in precision between a corded and heavier cordless mouse.
 
The weight of the mouse is just a personal preference that goes along with many other aspects for how people like them. I'd be willing to guess that people whom tend to be more of a twitch-style high sensitivity player like their mouses lighter. Less weight means you can start and stop the mouse much more quickly. Considering that many many people already remove the small weights that are installed in the corded mice to suit their need, if people don't want to go wireless due to the fact that they're typically heavier than their corded variety, makes perfect sense to me. We're dealing with mice that are accurate to thousandths of an inch, "a couple ounces" really isn't that small when you think about it.

As for the mx518 LED/Laser issue.. The Inquirer isn't exactly the best place to be getting your news from. So far logitech hasn't made any official comments to the press about the mouse, and all the pictures and other accounts regarding the mouse point towards it being LED.

Oh brother! I just noticed on the box it says "Gaming grade optical mouse."

What a load of crap. I thought it was going to be a little brother of the MX1000. What the hell is it, a new paint job for $20.00 more?

Oh well the price you pay for being ahead of the curve (just like with the 9700 Pro and 6800 GT)

It's a mouse with a newer agilent sensor. (1600DPI) The mx1000 is an older agilent sensor (800DPI.) As long as the mouse is used on normal mouse pads where losing tracking isn't an issue, who cares if the mouse uses light from an LED or laser? What matters is the performance of the sensor itself.
 
the 518 is supposed to use the same sensor as the Razer Diamondback....How much are the 518's supposed to go for? More then the MX1000? Dam I hope not =( I would like to at least try it.

yea the mouse flies with all the tweaks.. just have to get a hang of it now.. :D
 
here's what i'd want....

MX1000 body and buttons
MX518 sensor
all in a corded version.

that would pwn.

LOL... I do consider myself a nerd in many respects. A personal preference for a light mouse VS a heavier mouse is certainly not one of the pre-requisites. Tp each their own. And, I do own both-- a gaming mouse (light, extremely accurate) and an MX700... I use the MX700 rarely.

The MX700 is a great mouse, but it is larger than I would like, and the "weight" is more than I want for FPS.

Yeah, unfortunately it looks like the mx518 uses the same "better-than-previous-optical-mice-but-not-as-precise-as-the-laser-in-the-mx1000" technology as the DB.

So it's basically a diamondback in new clothes with the gimmick polished up a little.

Oh, and for all you mx1000 jocks, get bent.

I went from an mx700, to an mx1000 to a razer diamondback (I still own all three), and I can say that weight is nothing to do with it, the DB is tangibly snappier, for lack of a better word, in terms of precision and response in games.
I though the MX1000 was great as well, until I used the DB, it took one round of UT2K4 with the DB for the MX to get put in the cupboard.
