I've read the marketing and advertisements, and I don't believe it. I want to actually hear from someone who has the Logitech MX510.

How can you tell Logitech's MX Optical Engine (800dpi and 5.8 megapixels) are actually hardware based and not driver/software based?

Thanks.

I have a MX500 (the same thing only shittier and black) and its wonderfull. I doubt that you'll find anyone here that doesn't like the performance of it

i've got the blue one, and i love it, although i wish i had bought an mx1000

I actually have a blue and red mx510 and I love them .. wouldn't give them up for the world

Thanks for the replies. I do own the MX500, too. But, can anyone answer my initial question?

Hmm...I guess you could tell its hardware based by testing it out in games?? No clue really but for some reason while using windowsXP drivers I didn't know that I wasn't using my blue Mx510 to its full potential up until my friend installed the actual cd driver for me. You can turn the speed SO much more higher than the windowsXP driver. I think it was just me though.

I sooo want a Mx1000! That thing looks too cool!

I would say its hardware based. It feels the exact same in both XP Pro and Linux 2.6, so unless Logitech has special driver support programmed in the new kernel, its hardware based.

The MX1000 is a superior pointing device. I prefer it to my MX500.

Is that using Logitech's drivers or standard mouse drivers?

Standard MS drivers. I tried Logitech's drivers once, and didnt really notice a difference.

How would you rate the mouse compared to an Intellimouse 3.0A or a MX500?

P.S. Do all the buttons on the mouse work properly (save the task switch button)?

I also own 2 Optical Intellimice and a Wireless Intellimouse 2.0. The MX510 is more comfortable and has far better precision than my MS mice.

Yep, all the buttons (except for the task switch work), even in Linux. I was quite surprised.

I thought I would never find a mouse I liked as much as my old school Logitech dual optical, but the 510 is just as good or better. So accurate, fits my large hand perfectly, and a good variety of buttons that work very well for games.

The task switch button is virtually useless, imo...
