Hey everyone... thought I might do a quick review on a new peripheral. It's the Logitech Compact Keyboard K300. I have always loved smaller keyboards but I've never really come across too many that I wanted to stick with to be honest. I would probably love a Happy Hacker or something of the sort, but I've not tried that one. Anyway... the Logitech K300 appealed to me for a number of reasons which I will list. I like the fact that it has a full number pad but is not much larger than a compact keyboard without one. I will admit I was first drawn to it purely on cosmetics, but then I got it in my hands. So here's what I found...

I found the K300 to be useful without being too busy. There's your standard slew of shortcut keys that work as an alternate function of the F keys. What I like about it is that when you hit the FN key to modify the activity of the F keys, the orange icons illuminate brighter to indicate they are active... nice touch on a $30 keyboard. Then there's the white num, scroll, and caps lock indicators. These orange and white indicators match my LED theme I have going on my workstation. The keyboard has a shallow wrist rest area... it does not really get in your way if you don't like wrist rests, but it does provide a nice rounded feel beneath your wrists. Beneath the keys themselves there is a bed of orange, it does not light up but provides a slight contrast against the black keys... I like it. Then of course it has the Logitech black gloss finish that appears on many of their newer peripherals, this is everywhere but on the wrist rest area and the keys. It has two FN keys by the way, I like this because it allows for easier access to the whole assortment of alternate keys. The arrow keys are located directly under the right shift key and they are smaller than most, this takes some getting used to but I like them better the more I use them.
How do the keys feel to type on? Good. I like them. They're not quite as tactile as the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, but much better than the typical laptop style keyboard in my opinion. Now the way a keyboard feels is very much a personal preference just like mice and speakers. What feels good to me might not to you. I like my keys to have a shallow stroke when pressed and not feel like they are going to hang up or topple over when struck on the side or at an angle, this keyboard delivers in this respect, it's typical Logitech quality. It's an affordable, simple keyboard that does not take up that much real estate on your desk. For a $30 keyboard it gives everything I need and looks good doing it. I think I am actually going to give the Logitech Illuminated to my wife and this will be my everyday keyboard for now, at least until I can get my hands on a Wireless K340.

Now here's a few quick shots of it...

Please disregard the image quality, I took the pictures while half asleep
Oh and the little hairs on the keyboard... disregard those too... my dog likes to shake all her hair off when I get something new :( but at least she does not eat my peripherals anymore

Thanks very much for your review!

A few questions, esp since you came from the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard ("LIK") as well:

1 - I understand that the keys are not backlit, and only the media keys are backlit orange when the Fn key is pressed. What is the orange glow that permeates under all of the keys? Is it plastic orange membrane type material? Or is there an actual orange light under the keys? Its hard to tell from Logitech's stock photos. I have also checked Amazon's product reviews and I have not been able to find a conclusive answer. If there is an orange permating glow under the keys, can it be turned off or adjusted? [I'm secretly also wondering if it could be modded to a diff color]

2 - Further to my question in number one, is the orange backlit media keys only backlit when the Fn key is pressed, or is it always glowing orange?

3 - You mentioned you had the "LIK" from before. How do the key strokes themselves compare between the two? Does the K300 use the same scissor switch technology? Or is it more of a membrane only feel to the keystroke?

4 - How does the num key pad feel typing? I felt that the LIK's numpad was very mushy and not natural feeling.

5 - It looks like they fixed a lot of my pet peaves about the LIK --- noteably the short backspace key and the raised ctrl/alt/space bar in the lower row. Can you confirm this? It appears so during pictures, but that's all I have to work off of.

Thanks so much!!!!!

Great review, thanks for that.

I have one problem with the descriptions of this keyboard everywhere online (even on Logitech's website): I can't find correct dimensions for this thing!! Logitech doesn't list their specifications, and Amazon (with everyone else following suit) is listing it at 17.5 inches (or 44.5 cm), which I KNOW is incorrect because regular full-sized keyboards are that length.

Maybe you (or someone else in the know) can give me a straight answer: How wide is this keyboard? I'm trying to compare this to another compact illuminated keyboard, but that's hard to do when you don't know exactly how "compact" it is!

thanks again for the review!

I measure my K300 to be 15.75 x 7.1 inches

Also the Logitech site. http://www.hardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1446461 shows this keyboard having a stupid enter key and now back slash. So I assume the discrepancy in numbers is becaus multiple versions are floating around.

I recently bought 5 keyboards and this was the one I kept. The competition included the razer lycosa which was to heavy and slow on the key press. I also tried the logitech illuminated which had great key presses but no rollover so I could not use it for fast typing or games.

Do your fingers hurt after you type on it for a while? I'm looking for a compact keyboard that doesn't hurt my hands.

I actually just got the K300 but I felt that it was wayyyy too mushy. The store had both the K300 and the LIK and I figured that there wouldn't be much of a difference. Boy was I wrong. I swapped the K300 for the LIK and it's a huge difference.

Hate to necro this thread but I just stumbled across it and thought Id throw in a recommendation for this keyboard.

I bought mine about a year ago cause I use a keyboard tray and standard gaming keyboards are just too wide. This thing is perfect. It has a nice solid, quality feel to it and it works just fine in games. I notice no lag or anything like that and the keys have a good feel and feedback to them.

As for comfort, I type pretty fast but only use the first 2 fingers on each hand so Im definitely not conventional. However, I dont get any fatigue after several hours of gaming or banging away on various forums.

Ive tried a lot of mini keyboards and this one is the best one on the market as far as Ive seen anyway. I highly recommend it.
