How are the Logitech Harmony Remotes?

They look really cool. How are they in terms of functionality?

I use them all the time for my clients. They're not quite as easy to setup as people say (depending on your setup.), but the online setup is very nice and from then out they're buutta :)

I like them. too much $$ for me though.

You can get the older models for a pretty fair price online. Even the 688's have dropped to borderline fair price levels, for what they do I mean...

If it is just for you...then go the JP1 route. Can get a very nice remote for little $$$. If you have a wife...then you need the harmony. Nothing is better than "push the movie button dear" feature and the whole system works. Worth every $ then.

Yep, they may cost more... And I've actually had a friend comment that you should just buy a PDA and then get remote control software (?!?) But that W.A.F. or client happiness is more than worth the price of the remote.

I'm considering the JP1 route as I already have one. But the button labeling isn't as perfect as I'd like.

And I'm not married, lol.

yeah, I wish there was a JP1 remote that let you label buttons. oh well, not too worried about it.

How is the 768?

And also, I hope this isn't just me... (?) but look at "you might also be interested in..." I get eight other Harmony remotes and...

Three Exotic French Ticklers Thin Style Condoms

wft?!?!? :D

rofl.

Thats a deal maker if I ever saw one!

Comments on the WAF are right on.

For me it was simple: I would not have my HTPC in my house if I didn't have a harmony remote.

I am the proud owner of a 680. It's awesome, and I highly recommend it.

That 680 looks hot. and it looks like it has all the buttons I want/need too, in terms of how they are labeled.

This might be the winner!

Downside to the 768 is that it shares the directional buttons with either numbers, or transport buttons. Also, I don't think it has the dedicated activity buttons, which is one of the things that makes the 680 so wife-friendly IMO.

But you're right, at $50, you could buy 2 for the price of a 680.

Oh yeah, I think it has a jog wheel on the side...that would be interesting...

Yeah, I chose the 680 b/c I liked the transport buttons where they are, vs the 676. It's nice to have them right around the directional pad. I don't have to look at the remote while watching at all - which is the #1 reason to go with something like this vs. a touchscreen remote. I never liked having to look at the remote to navigate around, tactile feedback is important to me.

Crash, thats really good info on the button sharing. Thanks.

The 680 is looking better and better.

Bro, just get the Harmony Remote... It is by far the best remote I have ever used. Understanding the way to program make take a few hours since its not macro commands, but this thing can learn anything. Right now my remote controls the following:

*50" RCA DLP HDTV Scenium
*Custom Built HTPC (I use Meedio, TheaterTek, and Beyond TV).... the remote controls all of them easily! On top of that I remapped the keys using the harmony software and it now emulates the MCE Remote ....
*Digital Cable Box
*Harmon Kardon Reciever
*Security Cameras
*Xbox (you need the IR reciever for the Xbox...plus I have a modded Xbox running XBMC and the Harmony Controls it perfectly)
*TV in Bedroom
*DVD Player in Bedroom
*Living Room Lights
and the one that really impresses my friends.... it controls my floor standing fan (power on/off, oscillate, sleep mode, etc.....:D

BTW: I have the 688
I got it for $100
Paid $150 on newegg and got a $50 rebate

I have the 659 and am so glad I bought it. I put off buying a $150 remote, I just couldn't bring myself to spend money on an item that's free.

Let me tell ya it's well worth the money. The best thing about it that it passes the WAF factor. Plus all the other cool things, for example, when I watch the cubs I like to listen to them on the radio while I watch them on TV. I hate the new TV guys. So I just added an action called "Watch Cubs" and when it's used my TV comes on and my tuner goes to AM720. Very slick. Once the wife saw this, yes I am lucky my wife loves baseball, she forgot about how much it cost.

I definetly agree. The ability for the remote to do multiple commands by pressing one button is in a word "GENIUS"
