Okay so a couple of things first.

1) First headset purchased intended strictly for gaming.
2) No idea what "gain" really is or what it does in the technical terms.


Now when I originally bought this last December I wasn't expecting miracles for $69 and they did the job audio wise of pleasing me. My only problem is I don't like to wear them for gaming, which is why I bought them. Reason? The microphone on these default just sucks, or maybe I just really am missing something that others don't seem to notice.

From Day 1 testing the mic I couldn't hear a thing with all levels turned up. Drove me mad. Figured I had to actually up the +db gain to get anything out of the mic.

Problem? Microphone only does it in +10db, +20db, +30db settings. Unacceptable as even at +20db the non-stop static in your ears is crazy. Only the +10db is somewhat tolerable and gives my microphone enough of a boost that I don't have to yell as loud as possible for others to hear. Others say the audio is crisp, just low, so I guess that's a plus.

I just don't get it. Is this normal? Is it because they're cheaper headphones? What should I be looking for in the future to avoid this? I prefer to stay around the $100 budget because I'm not what you'd call an obsessive gamer or audiophiile. I just want decent sound with a decent microphone and no damn static. Five months of trying to tweak things and I've just about given up, but now I don't want to buy something else since I'm obviously missing something in my search. :(
 
I'd say if you're satisfied with everything except that static/loudness on the mic issue, get one of these. Should give plenty of volume (both ways), and the noise reduction for the 'mic part' (must install the software for it) can eliminate any static issues with the mic...though there likely won't be with that sound pod. I'd leave noise reduction off for the 'speakers' part of it. Easily returned to Amazon if you don't like the result too.

As for 'better' headsets? I'd probably wait and up your budget some and go with a standalone Astro A40 (not the system) or get headphones of your choice with an antlion modmic.

Thanks I'll look into that. Maybe I should have invested the extra $20 and got the USB version of this headset.

I've been doing some YouTube mic test searches for some possible upgrades down the line and it seems once you pass the $100 mark the microphone quality seems to improve drastically. As in very loud crystal clear sound even with the mic at a distance from your mouth, unlike this one where its very low and I have to suck on it, except if I turned the gain up then I get loud static as a side effect.

From your experiences do the Astros or other high-end headsets have background static when the mic is fully turned up? I'm just trying to learn where the problem is as I'm just assuming it's due to low quality.
 
I've tried both the Astro a40s and Sennheiser PC 360 (discontinued, Sennheiser G4ME ONE is it's successor). No issues with either. Also a couple of turtle beach headsets that didn't have inherent static, but were returned for comfort and sound quality reasons.
 
I just wanted to say that I have a G230 and for the last few months I've been plagued with mic static problems. I often game with my friends and use skype for voice chat so it was annoying and they had to put up with it. I didn't realize how annoying it was until I tried listen to this device and heard the static just blasting through.

I tried a number of things. Removing dust out of the case and unplugging and plugging in all the connectors again. I did a number of "static removal" things. Nothing was working.

I then finally uninstalled the audio driver that was automatically installed by Windows and installed the audio driver listed from my motherboard's manufacturer site (ASUS).

After a restart there was still static and I thought about giving up but then I realized that there were other devices as well in the recording and sound devices. I disabled these other devices and the static went away.

The static noise wasn't being generated by my mic but possibly by the motherboard external inputs that had their devices "enabled" in the Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback and Recording. I disabled all of them and left only the micorphone and speakers working. I recall that I did try this before but as the audio driver was not the exact one that was listed for my motherboard (being automatically installed by Windows and all) it probably did not interact with the motherboard correctly and did not exactly disable them.

My mic has been white noise/static free since and my friends have been very appreciative of my efforts for fixing this problem. Actually, they don't really care but whatever, I care.

Hope you can use this information to fix your mic problems if you're having the same issue. @_@
