Logitech 640's powerful enough?

I have an HTPC in my living room that is using an old SB Live connected to my fairly decent Pioneer home stereo (2 speaker). I'd like to setup a 5.1 system instead and was thinking about using the 640's.
I live in an appartment so I really don't need something super loud since I don't want to disturb my neighbours. My Living room is an "L" shape, but the longer section where the TV and couch are is aprox 20'x11'.

So my questions are:

- would the 640's be good enough to watch a movie with at a decent volume in that size of room

- should I use the 640's on their own without the home stereo? In other words would the stereo overpower the 640?

Thanks.

The 640's would sound ~ok, but nowhere near as good as your stereo. I don't think you'd need to worry about them being overpowered by your stereo, but I know the surround speakers don't have very long wires (they connect to the center channel via RCA jacks).

You could go get them from Circuit City, try it out and return it if unsatisfied. They have a pretty generous return policy.

I had the 640's in a room about 12x16, they were surprising loud for what they are. I would save my pennies and get some more powerful speakers. I picked up my 560s for 110$ used from the forsale forums....they SPANK my 640's by alot...havent even missed the center channel.

Maybe take a look at the Logitech Z5300?

Quite a bit pricey compared to the Z640's, but you get a much powerful system with crisper sound.

Thanks for the input guys. The Z5300's look good but they are more than twice the price of the 640's. I saw the 640's on sale for $87Can ($66US), and since I'm a sucker for a deal I almost bought them.
Hmm.....maybe I'll wait and get the z5300's.
