Logitech 5500's & White Noise

I just bought some Logitech 5500's got them home up set them up. I have them hooked into an Asus A7N8X-E motherboard with a nForce 2 chipset with of course on board sound (Realtek ALC650 AC'97). Via the NVIDIA nForce Control Panel I set the output to digital (using coax connection) and I am getting alot of white noise when a given speaker is not in use. I am sorta new to the 5.1 on my PC and would appreciate any help in tracking down why the white noise present. When I mute my speakers the white noise goes away 100%.

I just tested them with my DVD player and I am still getting the white noise. The Logitech tech support recomends I send them back any thoughts?

I do want to note that when they are not plugged into any source there is no white noise.

Does that mean anything?
 
is your microphone jack enabled? boost turned on? do you hear the noise over music, or does it mute it? if you plug them in analog-ly do you get the noise?
 
Yeah, mute the mic jack, line in, and midi when they are not in use. They will give off a ridiculous noise.

I muted my mic, line in and midi (boost is off). Still no luck, when I turn off my computer the white noise goes away. Just as I enter windows the white noise returns. I am wondering if there is some interference on my motherboard. I might pick up a sound card this afternoon after work just to try it out.

If I plug them in with the analog I still get the white noise.

Any other ideas :mad:
 
hmm, the motherboard maybe the problem, or it could be the cable. Not sure. You don't have a spare soundcard to test out with?
 
Well I went out and bought a new sound card and I still have the loud white noise that is unaffected by the volume and the slight rumble. I think I am going to RMA the speakers tomorrow. Anyone have any last ditch idea's that might do the trick?

BTW sound card is SB Audigy 2 ZS

I had similar problems with my revo. I mistakenly set the sample rate too high on the line input. I'm not sure if your card has those options, but at least it give you another place to look.
 
Well I RMA'd my 5500's today. I did not want to take a risk that a second set would not work and I would once again have to pay for return shipping so I got a full refund.

I went to BB after work picked up some 5300's and they work great! No white noise, no low rumble. The 5500's were clearly defective.
