I've been thinking about adding a cathode to the inside door of my school locker, but I'd rather not add a powersupply and an extension cable as well. Is there any way to modify a molex cable so that it can be powered by a common battery?

lol....um if it runs on 12v just take the +12 wire to positive and the negative to the negative on 2 sets of 8 D's(8 batteries wired in a series in parerel with another 8 D batteries) how long this would last if it worked is beyond me.....but for less mA you can do without parrerel or jus use AA's C's w/e puts out 1.5v in a series of 8

No idea what that is so i'll probably try the first option. Only looking to spend around 20$ anyway, since it's just something for fun.

You will probably have better results with an array of LEDs which can run off batteries for a pretty long time. A CCFL would suck them dry pretty quickly.

buy a 9v battery and go to radio shack for a battery connector with bare tails. Or you can get a battery holder with an on off switch. if you really want to waste your time modifiying a locker you could use a reed switch and have it turn on when you open the door, this way its only on when the door is open. 9v battery should power a CCFL for at least 12 hours straight, or just use those bubble lights, they use less power than CCFLs and are brighter.

or buy a UPS and find a 120v CCFL inverter
Most UPS systems use a 12v battery as their backup power source. Converting the power to AC and then using and inverter to convert it back to DC seems an awfull waste of time and efficient use of power. It would be easier to pull the 12v battery out of the UPS and use that to power it... Of course the length of time would be quite low...

It would be better to use an array of LED's as mentioned above due to their incredibly low consumption of energy per lumen and wire up some sort of battery array as well... That seems to be the easiest setup and longest lasting... Go with that... And of course the switch to the door to turn it on and off...

um....ccfl runs on 12v and consumes 15watt :p 12hours you say? i hope your talking about a 4inch ccfl

grab a lawn and garden tractor from walmart for about $20 and hook them up to that. when it gets dead just bring the batter home and charge it up.

you could also run stuff like fans so when you open the locker you get a ncie breeze of fresh air

if you want to be really hard core get a car headunit and 2 6x9 speakers and run them off the battery so you can have some tunes in the morning while you are chilling around your locker

And look like a total and complete idiot, Lets rice out our locker! YEAH!
/me glances at ^'s sig....

Anyways, if you mod it you should make a super ghetto 'on/off' switch, and use an LED array. You could power the entire thing off a 9v battery for a month or longer..

Ghetto on and off switch:
Bust out some aluminum foil. Cover the back with duct/masking tape/similar. Attach a wire to the foil side and another to the OTHER foil side (you have 2). Separate them and use them as a contact for each other. Put them in the 'hinge' of your locker. When shut they shouldn't contact, and when they open then it should. It'd probably take a little creativity to get it to work, but it'd be a fun project.

what about some water cooling in the locker, and maby a window.

i would just use a backup battery out of an alarm system, coz they run on 12v and then use slot of LED's,,, the batterys would last for ages coz they need to if the power goes out to your house and you still want the alarm set. and when the battery goes flat just take it home and charge it from a car battery charger. if i lived near you i would give you a battery but im in australia, Perth

Am I missing something? This guy wants to put a CCFL in his locker? He needs 12v. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a car battery 12v?

I did somthing like this before but i used two 9volts worked great.

Can you envision who will be the first person to punch the shit out of your locker door?

that is why i recomended the lawn tractor battery, it is just like a car battery except smaller. it out puts 12 volts dc, exactly what you need

whats the point? It might look cool if your hallways are dark, but in my schools, the hallways are very well lit and you wouldn't even notice the light of a CC. Maybe what would be an even better idea would be to build a rig and put it INSIDE your locker. Now that would be sweet.

hmmm...sounds like a good waste of money, but I guess we all waste a bit of money on pc's, BUT if you're going to do it, how about lasers, LEDs, and a disco ball! :D

Just add a pc to it and watch some porn between classes. You'll get some friends that way, too.

I have a old P133 laptop in my locker, and theres 802.11b in the school so i can get online too! I just bring it home on weekends to charge it. Nothing like playin a little doom in between classes.

I highly doubt the school would allow you to bring a car or tractor battery in and store it in your locker, it's a box full of lead and sulfuric acid! With schools being so paranoid these days I wouldn't be surprised if they called the bomb squad in to inspect a glowing locker.

No shit? I really didn't know that before I just read your very educational post. Thanks!

lol at the bombsquad... "which wire to cut, the red or the black...." it be a good waste of an hour i think :p

and Peach, theres no wep key at your school? or did you find a way around it?

Someone with a bloody hand? :p

The lockers here unfortunately are steel, and there's no way I could get away with cutting a window into it. But yeah, the last thing I did was scrawl poetry all over my locker. That didn't get any horrible responses, so I expect this won't either. And if it does, oh well. It'll at least look cool for a few days.

And thanks for all the responses everyone. I thought this thread was dead until I doublechecked real quick. I could go with some LED's though, since i've got like 5-10 lying around, and that'd save me money that i'd otherwise waste on cathodes.

Does anyone else think this is weird? This forum cracks me up sometimes.

I see that you're bitter about not playing doom at school ;)
I play it in class on my phone, now thats better then between classes. also you look abit funny if you spend alot of time standing infront of your locker.

Maby you couls put a fan on it so that when people walk past you get blowen on, also an alarm system so that when people knock on the locker it starts making sounts. and a webcam
