I have an HP laptop that has this "DriveLock" feature that supposedly prevents access to the hard drive even if it were removed from the laptop and put into another system. Seemed like a good idea, so I turned it on and set a password.
One bad BIOS flash later, I can't boot the laptop anymore. FedEx is coming tomorrow afternoon (Dec. 9) to pick up the laptop to take to HP so they can replace the mobo. They say they won't wipe my drive unless they have to, but I'd rather not trust them with all the stuff I have on there.
I have another laptop that I can put the hard drive into, but of course that is no good as it is, because of the DriveLock thing. After a bit of googling, it appeared that the general consensus on HP's DriveLock is that it's just some kind of ATA lock on the drive.
This seemed similar to how the Xbox's hard drive is locked, so I gave XBHDM a try. Among other things, this contains locking and unlocking tools. Knowing my password, I tried to unlock the HD using XBHDM's tools. This did not work.
Does anyone know more about HP's DriveLock than me? Or plain old hard drive locking? Any idea why just giving the password I set in the BIOS to the unlock program did not unlock my drive?
Thanks!

It seems that the unlock program wants a string of characters 0-9 and a-f.
Perhaps it wants my 8-digit password in ASCII in hex?
I seem to remember that unlocking the Xbox required a long series of hex.
