lock up playing games?

Guys,

I just upgraded my computer and it runs awesome except after a few mins (~2) playing games it locks up. This is what i have:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
MSI K8T800 Neo
2*512 MB DDR 400 (Hynix)
120gb Samsung Sata drive
Sapphire Radeon 9700pro

All of it is brand new except the 9700pro which i had in my old rig. I have the latest drivers for everything except bios which i was going to flash as a last resort.


Any ideas?

EDIT: Running windows xp with sp1 and the games i tried were Deus Ex 2 and NFS Underground - both had the same problem

I'd run prime 95 for an hour, and if that doesn't lock up I'd think it was something with your video card. But if you had the 9700pro in your old system and it didn't lock the games then thats just wierd,

I had a shit load of problems with my radeon9700 pro that went away when I got my 9800pro due to what seemed overheating problems. But what really fixed my problems 100% was when I upgraded my motherboard,ram,CPU.

It locked up in windows just before aswell but at the same time when i ran a game with my sides off and airconditioning cranked it didnt happen.

ill try that prime 95 thing and see what happens....

ps: the HD is brand new so its on a new format already....
 
Also run a few memtest86 tests, you might have gotten a bad stick of ram.
 
i rebooted after it crashed in windows and temps were:
cpu: 41 deg c
case: 40 deg c

the room ambient was fairly high (felt stuffy).

ill run the tests tomorrow and see how it goes (its midnight here atm)

the PS is brand new aswell - just in a case i bought rated at 370W dont know much else

Guys,

I ran prime95 and so far think that my dimm slot 1 on the mobo isnt working. this is why:

i originally had 2 512mb ram sticks in slot 0 and slot 1 which is when i was having problems. running prime95 gave an 'ILLEGAL SUMOUT' error (100 in very quick succession). swapping modules didnt fix the problem.

using either of the ram sticks in slot 0 worked, and with the sticks in slots 0 and 2 worked also.

any comments?

ps: i only ran tests 1 and 2 as it was giving the errors after about 2 minutes of test 1.

You have a VIA motherboard did you isntall the via motherboard drivers and disable the 9700 pro's irq in the bios for normal function... sounds about right.

Did you play the games with memory only in slot0 to see if they would not crash?

I had a via motherboard with a radeon9700pro and I had problems. Maybe he has a point about those shit VIA motherboards, I never liked VIA also. But you have hardware problem that you should fix. Personally I'd spend 100 dollars and buy a whole new motherboard that should without doubt fix all your problems, make sure to get a nforce2 though,
 
Crack open your case, and make sure the fan on the video card's heatsink is running. Make sure a stray wire is jaming it up. I was having the same problem as that, game freezing after a couple of minutes in. Turns out the GPU was overheating cause the fan was stuck. Took the wire that was jaming it up out, and it worked great after that, and It too was an ATI 9700pro.
 
i normally dont browse these forums to answer questions but thought i would do my civic duty and lend a helping hand.

i had a problem interestingly familiar to the one you're talking about like 4 years ago, and what a coincidence the hardware was almost exactly the same.

try running your processor slightly lower than its default manf. speed and see what happens. running my fsb at 260 mhz instead of 266 was worth the trade off of a working computer vs an expensive paperweight.

anyway just do it as a test and see if it doesnt crash, you dont have to leave it underclocked.
 
Update:

Ever since i swapped where the ram modules were located (slots 0 and 1 to slots 0 and 2) all the problems have gone. It hasnt crashed since and it ran prime95 fine - so i am concluding that for some reason the slot 1 on the mobo would accept the ram. according to the manual the setup i have should have worked...

anyhow it is working good now so thanks heaps for all the help and advice!

I dont think disabling irq´s for video will help at all, but i did move memory from slots 1,2 to 1,3 just because an article at VIA tech site said it gives better performance and it really helps, give it a try it may help you in the freezing problem.

I thought it was a complete necessity to disable the video irq's because if you don't it will lock up randomly with all my nvidia cards I've had to do that... Hmm..?

i havent disable the irq's and mine is working 100% now just after swapping the ram modules around - although i have an ati card with the via chipset so maybe that is different for some reason.

I've had problems with running two sticks of RAM on a couple of old VIA motherboards. I think it was my A7V133 and A7V266-e. I couldn't use tighter timings and couldn't get as much of an overclock out of my system if I had the DIMMs in consecutive slots. Having the sticks in the outer slots cleared up the problem though. I never actually had crasihng problems as stock speeds, but overclocked I couldn't get as high bus speeds or run as tight of timings.
 
VIA chipsets/motherboards require certain types of ram in one of the slots... the far right one for example on my VIA kt333 motherboard requires name brand memory like kingston and well.. they have a list of ram types that work in it. The other three or two slots on my board can use oem ram, I don't know why this is correct but it came directly from the highest rung tech support at VIA. I know this because I had immense trouble with this board and the RMAing process at VIA, as well, I spent an hour or two with tech support guys every few days.
