locating hard drive errors

Are there any programs out there that can pin point the location of a hard drive error. I have a 170gb partition in my hard drive that is giving errors, and I would like to find out which sector it is in, so that I can partition around it. Does anyone have any successful methods of partitioning a drive around an error?
 
Go to the manufacturer's website and look for their diagnostic software. Hitachi/IBM has the Drive Fitness Test (works on other brands), Western Digital has tools, Seagate/Maxtor does, Samsung does, Toshiba might not anymore (use the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test), and so on.

Use their diagnostic tools in not only the Quick or Short test, but also in the Advanced/Long/Thorough tests also (each company names it something different for some reason). Let those tests run fully, including the long surface test, regardless of the time it takes to complete.

When the diagnostic is done you should have some information to work with.

Thanks, but if the hard drive came with the laptop, how do I find out who the manufacturer is?
 
Device Manager will show the manufacturer/model number/part number like so:

It'll be in there, just might be a bit cryptic based on the model/part number, but you'll figure it out.
