Local/Physical RDMs reliable?

The title pretty much sums up my question; for any one that has used local SATA disks passed through as an RDM, have you found it reliable?

I have tried many drives (500 GB, 750 GB, & 1.5 TB Seagates and 2 TB Western Digitals) and no matter which ZFS supporting OS I use I eventually get many checksum errors, and eventually file errors. This happens in FreeNAS, Nexenta, Open Solaris, and Open Indiana with either RAIDZ or single drives.

With the RDMs passed through to Windows the drive manufacturer's diagnostic all pass complete testing. So, do RDMs just not work well for local SATA drives or might it be something else?

FWIW, I do plan on building a new setup that supports passing through a SATA controller to the guest OS, but I would still love to know if the problems I'm having are caused by using RDMs.
