is there a LiveCD that is made for folding, just pop it in set a few things up and fold away?

also if there is no LiveCD what are my options for PXE booting? i am looking for something i could PXE boot with all my info/settings needed to fold and not have to set anything up, like power on the system and start folding?

what i have is a nice server that i use for learning its a dual 2GHZ opteron but when i am not doing anything with it i would like to fold, but i am always reformating the drive with different linux distros/ windows server etc.

Evils got it.
I use it as well for some of my minions. Works great.

Just be warned that there is an intermittent problem with the disc hanging at the completion of wu's... my SMP box lost three last week alone, and we have not been able to find the cause yet....

Actually I have to change my position on this subject. After much testing on different OS and OS configurations the new client does hang at the end. Says it’s shutting down and never does.

My never say die pure Linux never had a problem froze up on one 7 days ago. Since it’s headless I only realized the problem after checking CPU count at Stanford.

Since I only have 4 boxes running now it’s pretty easy for me to check.

Some times it takes weeks for an issue to show up too, annoying as hell.

Anyhow, it’s not limited to one OS or setup. Double check your network is set not to power down, always a good move.:)

I've lost two WU and 18 hours now to the SMP client choking at the end.. It's..... annoying. I'm pretty good about checking FAHMon every couple of hours but when the fastest folder I have freezes an hour after I go to bed.. well, that just sucks.

Hopefully a more reliable SMP client will come out in the near future.

ok i will check this out thanks

anything else i need to know before i start to fold, i was folding for a long time like 4-5 years ago i forgot how all this works

also could any point me to some good articles or explain how much power computers use and what the electric bill would be if i have all at full load, i would like to get a nice little farm going but i am currently at my parents house and dont want to the electric bill to go through the roof.

i have some serious power here i could get going, my main rig is a q6600 then i have 3-4 servers i have here one is a X2 3600, then i have my eserver 325 with dual opterons, then another old box i was using for ipcop its like an athlon 1700+ if i remember right,

then after that i have an ipcop box but i dont think ipcop has a plugin for folding? i know some linux firewall's do maybe smoothwall? and i also have my parents iMac i could get going on folding.

I too have had the client close upon finishing twice on me in the last two days. Hopefully not today though! I have a large scientific going in today I'd hate to lose those points.

ok i think everything is setup and working good, now i did not sign up for a user name i just select a username and it adds me to the team or do i need to do something? how do they prevent somebody from using my name?

also i am not using the USB backup option should i be doing that? looking at my current work unit it says it wont be done until the 24th, that mean if my computer shuts off it would have to start over again?

They don't prevent someone from using your name....they assume that people are smart enough to search for the name before trying it. In the future, names will be assigned using a passkey that you enter into the client (they are already doing this for Linux beta clients), but as of now they aren't.

what about my setup?

as long as you are under windows, just use whatever name you want....if you don't find the name here, then it's free...granted, it looks like AMD_GAMER is folding for tom's hardware, so you may need to pick something else, unless that is you folding for tom's

lol i know, i had to choose another name,

what about the USB backup and my computer restarting?

Yea if you aren't saving the files to any sort of backup, then you'll lose all data if you restart in the middle of a WU....unfortunately it won't write the data back to CD for you :D
