I just installed XP Pro Build 2600 SP1 on my Sony Vaio PCV-L620 it is a 500mhz P3 with about 192mb ram in it now. I just put in a newer 12gig hd in it. Well I just formatted and installed XP on it. Everything during the install went just fine. I can work in windows pretty for a bit then it will freeze. No blue screen, no error message, no beeps nothing just flat out freezes. It has happend when I try to go to any site on internet explorer as well. What could this possible be? Thanks alot...
 
Yeah I thought about that....Yet I installed XP on my old sony laptop and had no problems with it.


Right now I'm running Windows Update in Safe Mode...It will freeze any other time. Maybe that will do something for me. I checked out sony's site to see if they provide drivers for the computer for XP....Thats a negative.
 
192MB ram is not the greatest for running XP. For your system, I'd either run Linux or Win2k, but XP is a no-no for less than 256MB of ram, and 512 is preferred.
 
Well I had win2k on there decided what the heck I'll through XP on it for fun. Now its not working right.

I'll agree with you there. You may want to check your swap file settings too, sometimes if it isn't enabled, or you have little room left on your HD, the comp will freeze. I don't know, just an idea, but more RAM will help (oh plz do not flame me ;) )

Where is the swap files setting located at?

Performance and maintenance
System
Advanced tab
under performance click Settings
advanced tab
under virtual memory click change
 
Check your power settings. Disable your power saving on the drive, and in the bios kill save to disk. Reboot, and try again.

Also take out any PCMCIA cards (NIC, Modem etc. Also make sure that the drive is installed tightly.
