I recently gave the old lady an old USB 2.0 external storage unit with a maxtor 250gb hdd in it. Since she has been using it we have noticed little hangups or strange instances where it seems he laptop is lagging out. When this is going on, the drive is tasking off and on. My question is, is it more likely that the the HDD is is the issue or would it be a USB issue?

The laptop is about a year old, and any other usb device works fine. There are no strange noises comming from the hdd.
 
Sorry, I just read it and it seems a little vague. She is using it to simply store music on, when its not active but on is when this is happening. There are no system files or software installed on it. I dont know how else to explain.....

Even if I can get an idea where to start looking for the problem, that would help lol.. Thanks !
 
Does the lag last just about 15-20 seconds and then go away for a while? It could be the drive spinning down to save power. Is this one of the One-Touch Maxtors and if so is it a grey plastic case, a blue plastic case or an aluminum case? What OS and version are you running?

No, this is an off and on thing that lasts from 1-5 mins off and on and sometimes it wont go away until restart. This is a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 in a external unit you can buy to put your own drive in.

Windows 7 Ultimate with SP1.
 
The quickest way to resolve this is to remove the drive from the external enclosure and see if the problem resolves. If so it is likely the external chassis. Before you do anything, try the standard change the cable and try another USB port (preferably on the other side of the laptop, not the port right next to it if possible)
 
Okay, same result on all 4 usb ports. Used 2 cables, same thing.

Now, I pulled the drive and stuck it in a PC, seems to be fine. Is there any free software I can use to test this drive fully?
 
So I tried running SeaTools, BSODs the box I put the drive in to test it. is there a HDD utility other then one made by the companies who make the drives? As most say they are to test that type of drive.
