If I want to put together a rock solid system, in a small case (was thinking shuttle but think it will be too small for any kind of expansion) that will be used with a touchscreen in a public space, what would you recommend for specs?

Doesnt need any special video and hell doesnt even need sound really but all the latest mobos come with sound anyway. System doesnt need to be crazy powerful or anything either just going to be running a small custom program.

I was thinking maybe the standard AMD A7N8X-Deluxe w/ 2500XP with an extremely reliable powersupply + quality ram (Enermax + Corsair).

The thing is if there is a cheaper solution, like a reliable motherboard besides the A7N8X that is cheaper without all the bells and whistles ect I will go with that. Also AMD isnt required or anything, a P4 system would be fine if that would be better qualified or cheaper for what I need to do.

Anyone have any recommendations for a small case or other specs?

If your going with that board, a Shuttle is out of the question. They do come with their own boards however, and are pretty damn good machines.

Your biggest concern is going to be a locking system, to make sure no one walks off with a free computer.

Oh yeah I knew that shuttles cant use most standard motherboards I just kind of threw both ideas in there

oh yeah and someone walking away with the system isnt going to be an issue with the kind of area it will be in that really wont be possible ;)

I noticed you said corsair memory. I have never used their "value" memory, but i can vouch for the crucial memory. I run it on my 4 year old computer and this thing never crashes. great memory.

If your just thinking of a little "internet cafe type deal", then there is no big diffrence between the amd and the Intel processors... insteand of thinking of the processor, i would think about the motherboards themself. As im sure everyone will say, stick to the big names and you will do fine (abit, asus, intel, gigabyte, msi).

Also, another thing to point out is the hard drive. Out of all my friends and myself, i have found seagate and western digital to be the most reliable (maybe not the fastest though).

Like you said, if graphics is of no concearn, just get a cheap one from ATI or Nvidia so that way you have up-to-date support.

Other then that, just update the drivers, and see how that goes. A bios update might also be helpful if you get an older motherboard.

It depends on what you wnt to do with these PCs. If you won't do anything more taxing than Surf the Internet, dowload, and listen to MP3s, the system will not cost you all that much... 4100 for mainboiard/proc, [Linkage] some cheap RAM for 50$, and an 80GB HDD for next to nothing. Then the touchscreen (no idea how much that costs), and you're done.

Sans touchscreen, we're talking about a system for $250, and it will be tiny .

Isn't going to be for personal use so no internet surfing, downloading or mp3 listening going on. They will be soley for the purpose of running a small program at all times for people to interact with on the touchscreen.

yea, its true. With what your talking about you can get a computer for around 500$ (no touch screen moniter). A great place for this would be someone like www.cyberpowerinc.com
