I read the Guide on multi-GPU folding... and I read at the top about each video card needed to be connected to a monitor? or possibly a KVM? or a VGA dummy cable?

is this a necessity? if so what's a VGA dummy cable?

ultimately I wanna build one of those shiney x4 9600GSO folding boxes them look nice... and I'm leaning more towards that in power too...

would 1 box with 4 9600GSO's with minimum hardware use more or less power then say... 3x Intel e2180 @ 3GHZ running headless?

Vista is picky about having monitors connected to graphics cards. It can detect the resistance from the monitor, and this is how it can tell if you have connected a monitor to a card. VGA dummy plugs are simply a DVI -> VGA adapter, with (3) resistors placed in the VGA pins.

You can make these very easily, and they are much less expensive then a KVM. If you intend on running Vista, you will need them.

If you have a spare XP license, and this is going to be a folding-only machine, I would just use that, and then you can skip the dummy plugs - unless you plan on overclocking the GPUs, in which case you will need them anyway.

:)

You can still overclock, but it will "forget" the overclock every time you reboot. It's a weird problem.
