well i just bought and installed a liteon dvd burner and ive noticed that its noisy..
it actually sounds like its about to fall into pieces. i wonder if its the burner itself or if ive just installed it wrong on my qpack
 
Lite-Ons sound like jets. They are noisy. I used one through 2 generations of upgrades until I was incidentally forced to upgrade and did not realize just how noisy it was (even idling) until I did. Bought an LG and let me tell you, the noise difference is tremendous! Too bad the LGs are longer drives as they have been rated the quietest (as well as fastest DVD-Burner last I checked).

I'm on a Plextor now, which was only slightly less noisy than the Lite-On until I drastically reduced the speed via the firmware. My vote goes to the LG if you can fit one.

Lite-Ons were spectacular values when Yamaha and Plextor were ruling the market, but now that prices have plummeted, there are better alternatives.
 
yup, lite ons can get rather noisy when they spinning. Either way, you can cant really mess up an install on an optical drive.
 
yeah ive had a philips, an lG and a plextor and the lg was the best priced as well as the most silent..

this liteon does really sound like its broken.. but hey it works
 
i had a few older lite-on cd burners that were very noisy rattlers, and 2 dvd burners that were silent. my nec 2550 i have now sounds like a jet lol

The last four LG DVD burners I've bought have all been shorties. I buy nothing else.........I like the DVD RAM capability.
 
how does the lg deal with copy protection, i rip alot of movies to my harddrive and i need a drive that doesnt care. my old lite-on's, plextors, and this nec dont even pay attention to them but sonys, pioneers, and hp do. the say its copywrited and you can rip them. i think the next drive will have to be a lite-on light scribe for $59 unless the lg's are good
 
The best burner i think is BenQ for short drives. I have a LG. You can flash the benq with mediaspeedcode to unlock dvd rip speeds. The LG is also a quiet burner but you can't do that. The BenQ also have better burns when doing dvd backups. I do Neroscans. Better results with the BenQ brands.
