litecoin rate seems low

A friend of mine that knows very little about computer is convinced he wants to be a miner, so I told him I would help him out, and the first part of that was me trying out mining litecoins so I knew something about it.


I am running guiminer with cgminer version 3.7.2 with the following settings:

thread concurrency:34500
worksize: 512
vectors: 1
intensity: 20
gpu threads: 1

I am only pulling about 690kash/s (according to guiminer)with a radeon 290x, which is a couple hundred points too low based on what I have read. The above settings are what I settled on after messing with the settings and figuring out they give me the best rates.


I have read probably 30-40 pages of "how to set up" type sites and forums, figured I should just ask on here at this point.
 
Try changing your intensity, I've heard that running it at 20 may actually reduce its khas/s. Also, a lot of what is reported is using very high OC values for core. See if running the miner changes the core value, and if it doesn't look into what others are using as their OC values and try changing your .bat file to encompass them. Also, you can mess with voltages as well to get higher and more stable OC's.
 
Also, in addition to above post, try overclocking the memory. I understand that LTC likes faster memory, as opposed to BTC where underclocking the memory didnt affect hashrate so one could downclock and save power/heat.

Slight overclock on core, high overclock on memory seems to be the optimal setup for LTC. I also agree with above post on the intensity. My 5850 is more efficient at an intensity of 15 instead of its default 18.
 
I'm also having fits with getting the 290X to produce where it should be (my understating is 800-900khash should be expected). Intensity = 20 certainly does not work - when I go verbose on the output in cgminer it basically says LOL no.

690 is far better than I'm getting.. I'll have to give your settings a try...
 
Damn, about to pull the trigger on a couple 290 cards, but having trouble finding information on how they mine. If someone figures out settings it would be appreciated!

I got 100 khash better by switching from 512 worksize to 64.
 
my 280x is sittin at 730khash... it just came in today so I haven't had a chance to really tune it but its the HIS with a stock clock of 1050 core
