I've been looking into getting a DVD burner and am leaning towards Lite-On.
Have seen LDW-811S and LDW-851S listed but can't seem to be able to tell what the difference is between them.
The Lite-On web site lists the 811S when I click on the 851S.
Newegg seems to list both model numbers onder the same drive.
Does anyone know if there is a diiference?

The 851S has a different controller inside than the 811S. Did you know that you can hack a Lite-On 411S to an 811S?
 
Does the diiferent controller give one an advantage over the other?

Partially true ;). What the Z-mod does is patch your drive EEPROM with 8X calibration data, and makes the drive accept the 811S firmware. I've done this mod on my 401S, and it's happily burning away at 8X as an 811S :D

And before you ask, for the mod you need to register at www.speedlabs.org and go to the forum->Zebra mod section.

You can mod a 401S OR a 411S into an 811S, and a 451S into an 851S.
 
Not everyone uses zebra's mod. The "classic" hack is an EEPROM patch and a hacked firmware. If his v3 or v4 hack is working good for you, good for you. ;) I don't feel like messing with his version because I don't like to waste discs.

Oh,you're using the Polish method? Be careful.That method DOES NOT give you proper 8X calibration for your EEPROM.

No, I wouldn't touch the Polish method. I passed on it even though it was more readily available first.

can I do this with my dru-510a, isn't the lite-on a rebaged sony?
 
NO, the Lite-On 440 is the rebadged Sony. The new Sony DW-U18A is a rebadged Lite-On 812S.
