Liquid Helium Acheives 500 Ghz Processor...

It is interesting. I want to know what processor they were using.

Considering the speed, i am sure it was a small simple chip... nothing like what we have in our computers. Probably something with just a few transistors or a chip designed for specialized use in communications or signal generation.

I am sure i could have some fun playing with a tank of liquid helium though.

yes but atleast we now know its a 500ghz barrier, i want my x86 one tomarow k thnx

From the article,

.......At room temperature, the IBM-Georgia Tech chip operates at 350GHz, or 350 billion cycles per second. That's far faster than standard PC processors today, which range from 3.8GHz to 1.8GHz. But SiGe chips can gain additional performance in colder temperatures........

oh god think of the bottlenecks you would have if your CPU ran at 500GHz......

By the way, This is a Silicon-Germanium chip, and IBM have said they believe they can tune the SiGe chips to be able to run as fast as 1THz at room temperatures.

Intel has had P4 chips running in labs at 10GHz yet the fastest we ever saw was shy of 4GHz. So dont think you will be playing around with your .5THz SiGe chips just yet....or ever. We still dont know just how stripped down this would be, and if you could get all the necessary transistors for a CPU to run that fast even on SiGe chips.

Here's another write up of the story from Beta News.
"IBM said that computer simulations seem to indicate that the silicon-germanium (SiGe) technology could eventually support near-terahertz operation, even at room temperature."
