Linux Should I?

Should i go from Windows XP prefesh to Linux i dont know what verison. If someone uses it now, can i have some information, as to I never used it.

Do you have any REAL reason to do it other than saying "Im running Linux" ?

My advice:

Go to UbuntuLinux.org and download their 'live' CD. This will allow you to run linux without installing it try it out and get used to it. After a while you can download the normal non live version and install it permenantly.

If you play games, don't use linux cause game makers are idiots at the moment. If you use it for every day things then yes, linux is better. I recommend though, reading a few guides on linux so you can see how it works as opposed to windows. Jumping into Linux cold can be bad if you don't have patience to learn new things and might put you off it. Just stick at it and in the end it pays off.

Doesnt have to have a real reason, might just want to try out something new. Wether its to say hes running it or just for casual use, its up to him. As i said, games are more compatable on windows cause game makers are stupid but if he does anything else then Linux is a better choice

If you don't have a real reason for switching, I think you'll soon get frustrated. That seems to be the case for a lot of people anyway. You start thinking "man, I could do this in 5 seconds with XP, now I have to search around the internet for 2 hours trying to figure it out."

So, if it's just to learn linux, get a good book, like O'reilly's running linux and follow along on your own linux system while reading the book. Have specific things you want to accomplish etc.

There is also knoppix, which is another live CD and pretty good.

Game makers aren't idiots. ~95% computers run windows. Game developers would be pretty stupid if they didn't concentrate their efforts in windows. Plus windows has DirectX which is a nice extraction layer for games, and in general leads OpenGL in bells and whistles.

I also don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to run linux just for the sake of running it. It can be a wonderful learning experience (or frustrating nightmare ). Just be prepared to google and read and google again.

I don't think you should wipe out a Windows install and completely go Linux. Your question doesn't tell us anything about why you want to or are thinking about switching.

Linux is not as cool as people make it out to be, in that it does not actually get you chicks.

However, I find it fun, it's great for development work, but there's much to learn for what you get.
