ok i was thinking about going to linux for a few of my boxes,
Atm im using electron microscope to monitor me boxes

my main box that i use to monitor is windows, SO will it work the same for monitoring ?

next question what nix should i use :)

thanks in advance peeps for sorting this n00b out :)

EDIT**** oh and will vnc run on nix

as per the stickie, there are several apps to monitor folding with.

i'm using Mandrake 10.0 to fold with right now, but i want to switch to Damn Small Linux (only 24MB overhead! :D)

you should also consider overclockix, an OS made by Arkaine23 (from OCAU) for folding (remember to change the team number to 33!!!)

also, try the uber-highly optimized Yoper, if you have a current (i686 or higher) CPU.

luck!

EM just monitors the folding client, I think it does it through the log file. You can ask theweatherman he lurks around here, or got to his site. If it does just monitor the log file then as long as you have samba active on the linux boxes and the windows pc can see the F@H directories then it should work fine.
I'm sure others have more experience doing what you want to do.

Luck

there is a sticky in this forum on how to do this with EM on a windoze machine monitoring a linux box. All you have to do is setup and configure Samba and share the folding directory. I don't reccommend DSL for this, at least not unless you recompile it so you can change the hostname. It can be done, I did it for a while till I redid my entire network and changed all my boxen to windoze. Gonna change back to linux sometime in the future though.

are there monitoring clients that work in the text mode of DSL?

i don't know what text mode it is, i just pressed ctrl+alt+del and it got me out of X

then i ./FAH502-Linux.exe

and it's running

anything to monitor that?

As long as the F@H directory is shared and samba is running then EM should do it...Check the sticky.

I use Gentoo on this comp. I've used Slackware in the past on many PCs. This is my first with Gentoo, and I like it.

sweet, thanks.

btw, does anyone know if there's a way to actually install DSL on your computer's hard drive? because i wanted to show my dad the GUI of DSL and i accidentally restarted; woe is me when i discover it was always ram-mounted -- and i lost ~4 hours of folding :(
