Hey Apple gurus, I hope some of you can help me out here. I am investigating PAM for development work and have been directed to look at the Mac OS X PAM implementation and compare it against the PAM used in Linux distributions (which is Linux-PAM). Of course, I don't have access to a Mac OS X machine, so I'm now just researching through what I can find on the net.

My main question is - does Mac OS X use an implementation of Linux-PAM, and if so, are they compatible?

From developer.apple.com and kernel.org, it would seem like it does, because a search for PAM on Apple's Developer site turns up something like this:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/pam.8.html

Which is the exact same man-page for Linux PAM (and it even says Linux-PAM up top) that you would get under Linux.

Meanwhile, kernel.org has this (old) info:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/pam/whereislinuxpam.html

And mentions that the implementation in Mac OS X embraces and 'extends' it.

Any direction and answers would be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone.
