I am going to try and find an old hard drive for my old box tomorrow. I have decided if I find a HD with about 10 gigs or more I will partition the drive and install Linux. So I thought step one gotta chose a distro that will run on PII 233 and 48 megs of ram. So give me your ideas!

Opps, Could I get this moved to the Linux section. Sorry Im still getting use to the fourms

What are you going to be using the 233 Linux box for? Server, just internet stuff, or something else? If you want a current distro with a pretty GUI and all that then it'll be pretty slow no matter what you use. I've installed and had a decent time with SuSE and Mandrake on PII 400s but both were intolerable (in KDE) on a P133.

DSL (damn small linux)

comes with fluxbox as a gui, you really won't be able to run much more than flux...

and i'd doubt if you could get firefox to run acceptably on that thing, dillo however will be great

damn small linux gets my vote

i think fc3 is out of the question because it requires 64mb of ram. thats the only linux ive ever used. good luck.

in my mind it's not the distro that matters in these cases, but rather the desktop envorinment/window manager that's used.

openbox, fluxbox, or maybe icewm should make a *new* distro usable on that workstation.

I've put Gentoo on slower machines with a fraction of the disk space.

You might want to try a LiveCD distro as there are a few that will run with minimal disk space and memory usage. If you need to compare them, you could take a look at www.distrowatch.com They seem to have a pretty good selection of most of the distros.

I have pretty much that same machine and I run Gentoo on it. It wasnt too bad to compile. I just fired it off before I went to bed. I definatley wouldn't put Gnome or KDE on it. I personally like fluxbox.

--edit
I do have 256 megs of RAM though. But the proc is the same.

Running an old IBM with a 233Mhz and 48Mb of ram using Slackware and running XFCE as the desktop without any problems.
