I just read the IBM Begins Selling Cell Blades article and it got me thinking...would it be possible to run Linux on a PS3? Since the servers IBM will be selling come with FC5, I was wondering if FC5 could run on a PS3 since they're similar processors.

Somebody will make a distro for it eventually...

Just think about it... There is already Linux available for the PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, PSP, Gameboy DS....

There is already a project in motion to put Linux on the Xbox 360, and Linux on the Revolution will just be a simple port of the Gamcube distro.....

It'll happen. Just give it a little time.

Also, rather the PS3 can run linux or not has basically nothing to do with it's processor. After all, we see linux running on basically anything... from cell phones, to wrist watches, to calculators, to personal computers, and indeed most consoles.

That is awesome. How would Linux work on something that? Is there a way to dual boot it so it can play games and stuff to and then be able to boot Linux separately?

I swear the rumors going around (might have been confirmed) said it would be shipping with Linux installed, or at least they would have it available freely. I think the reasoning some had behind it was to allow for more independent game developers to use the PS3 without needing to get the game licensed and pay to get it into the stores.

umm question, isnt the cell processor a ppc cpu with 7-8 'cells' so wouldnt a ppc linux distro work, or I guess you could recompile one with the octipiler.
