Linux on a Flash Drive

Ok I am very new to linux and what I want to do might be possible, it might not, hell it might be too hard for me to do. I would like to basically make a Live CD on a Flash Drive for Ubuntu. I have been looking around in a few places like the Ubuntu forums for some ideas on this, but I would like to get some feedback on this here. Please none of those "Google It" responses. If you have a link I should look at, please share. If you have an idea for me to try, please share. If you want to be an ass about something or hate, please go somewhere else. I want to learn this, and sometimes a helping hand is better than solo education.

I've never tried putting Ubuntu onto a flash drive but I know Damn Small Linux can be put onto flash.

Is there any way to do any of this without having linux installed? I don't have a machine dedicated for it just yet. And one more question......anyone try this with windows?
