I installed DSL on my dad's old Dell b/c any other distro simply will not work well w/ the 128 mb of RAM it has. I managed to get the client and already have a protein downloaded.

I am still confused to a few things:

1) How do you write a script in Linux?
2) How do you edit the Samba configuration files?
3) when I downloaded the Samba extension which comes as a DSL file and I try to load it, it says permissions denied even though I am sure I put permissions on in the File Manager. What am I missing?

Help me get through this.

i'm a linux noob myself, but i might could help with problem number 3.

in the console type: chmod +x "filename.extension"
to make filename.extension executable. that can solve the permission denied problem.
if it's a *.gzip you have to unpack it first (idk how, try typing unpack --?)

good luck.

hopefully unhappy_mage will see this thread soon!

You not only have to make the file readable (and exec if so wanted), but also the dir that it sits in, and all the dirs before it. To make a file read/write/exec by any one: chmod 777 file

As for samba, reading DSL site, I don't see it supporting it, with out building it manually & I don't see a package for gcc to build it. If it does happen to support it and you get it installed, you can run the command:
find / -name smb.conf
this will tell you the location of the samba config file.
from there ether pico or nano smb.conf
if pico or nano is not installed, see if you can get emacs or nano on the machine. I think only redhate is the only distrib not to include this editor by default, lots of people like vi but I have yet to learn it in my 7+ years of using linux.

Editing the config is another animal, this page is good for that:

Good luck.... your gona need it :p

edit:
btw just re-read the installed packages, looks like it comes with nano, but might be called nano-tiny.
ii nano-tiny 1.0.6-2 free Pico clone with some new features - tin

1) Type "nano YOURSCRIPTNAME", type in whatever the script should do, hit ctrl-X,y,enter to save&exit, then "chmod +x YOURSCRIPTNAME". Type "./YOURSCRIPTNAME" to execute it.
2) "nano /opt/samba/smb.conf" and make changes, then ctrl-X, y, enter to save and exit.
3) Try this to unpack it directly (you're running from hard drive, right? this won't work otherwise):
cd /
tar zxvf /path/to/samba.dsl
It'll then print a bunch of stuff. To start samba, type this:
nmbd
smbd
To make it start on boot, add these lines to /opt/bootlocal.sh, probably at the end. Yeah, that'll work.
