Linux Infected by Trojan

And correct it doesn't exactly say that linux is unsecure, however it does mean that it isn't perfect in every aspect. a stupid person is still going to be able to get some piece of malware on there if they really want to.

Who here has claimed that linux was perfect?

Sorry, i am use to having to group virus, trojans and worms into the category of virus for the average person and forgot to stop doing that around people that would know the difference. Yes, you are correct trojan not a virus.

You are aware that Linux (esp ones running apache) have been hit by worms quite a few times. I don't know any linux user that is soo disillusioned that

#1 running linux makes them impervious from user error
#2 code with exploits can get exploited

My post there was only to point out how people are trying to come up with any excuse possible to say that this isn't a virus or that it doesn't prove that Linux can get a virus due to <insert reason here>. Above they tried to say that nobody download it so it doesn't count, which has now been shown to be wrong so they will need to come up with some other reason.

Yes, an exploit was created and managed to be distributed. It's along the same lines as someone taking a trusted Windows program, infecting it and convincing a distribution site like download.com that it's a legitimate file. The vector this trojan exploited is present on every operating system as long as users are allowed to run code without subjecting it to a full security audit. In fact, if you pushed me, I'd have to say this particular vector is a much larger issue on Windows due to the lack of a trusted distribution and signing system. Still, any OS will let you run malicious code if you tell it to.

I don't think any Linux advocate has ever said Linux can't get viruses, that's just a stupid claim to make, and Apple will see the folly in it soon enough. However I do think that for the most part there is a much stronger trust relationship established by the normal Linux software distribution model than the Windows one.

In other words I think it's much less likely for a naive user to accidentally install infected software on their machine.
