Linux Folding Question

Ok, I'm new to Linux. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04on the Dell i9300 laptop in my sig. I kept having Vista problems (major crashes and corruption) so I made the move. I'll be adding a bunch of new systems soon and thought this is as good a time as any to try it out again.

So, I got folding running, but it doesn't give me the text box showing progress. Is this normal? Also, in the process list it shows FAH Core 82 TEN times with 3 of them showing CPU usage. This is a SINGLE CORE CPU! Is this normal? Is there a FAHMon program for Linux? Thanks for the help!---The Cheeze

I'm guessing you attempted to start the client multiple times since you don't have the console screen showing. That would probably explain the multiple cores running since you have more than one instance running. This is obviously not a good thing. You will need to kill every one of the processes and then start the client just once.

We had a question about this in regards to Ubuntu not long ago. You should be able to bring up a console window, navigate to the directory F@H is installed to and then type in the command to start the client. I believe the console window should stay open and show the progress then if that's what you are wanting. I'm not familiar with Gnome since I haven't used it in ages so I'm not 100% sure.

There is FahMon for Linux. I don't remember the website offhand but you'll have to download from there. I don't remember if you have to compile it or if it has a package for Ubuntu. Either way, it should have the instructions on how to install it on the webpage.

Also, if you want to monitor the client from a Windows system running FahMon instead, that shouldn't be too difficult. You'll need to configure Samba and use that to share the F@H directory. Once you do that, there should be no problem adding the client into FahMon on another machine to be monitored over the network.

FAHSpy is a different beast altogether for monitoring Linux clients. It does not have a Linux port and it's a pain in the ass to setup a way to monitor Linux clients over the network using it.

I've had all the same issues as you do only last week, which was the first time I installed Linux. Actually, I just finished another installation about an hour ago and had also completed one yesterday.

Yes, you have to have the client launch in a terminal, otherwise it will run in the background. Right click on the desktop and select 'Create Launcher.' In the window select 'Aplication in terminal' in the drop-down box. Then browse to the folder where the fah executable is and select OK. You will also need to include all the necessary flags after the executable location in the 'Command' box, which brings me to your next question below.

It's normal if you didn't want to fold SMP units. In order to do so, you'll need to include the -smp flag along with the other flags, otherwise you'll only receive standard WUs. Delete all the files in your folder except the archived executable and the mpiexec file and restart the client with the created launcher which should be located on the desktop. It will take you through the configuration process. If you select a memory usage of 256, you'll receive mostly P2605 WUs for higher PPD.

FahMon should do the trick but haven't tried it myself yet. I prefer to use FahSpy but it's not natively supported by Linux.

It's been a while since I tried, but FAHSpy didn't run worth a damn under Wine any time I tried to use it on a machine. I did have it monitoring Linux clients over the network at one time but it's such a pain in the ass to get setup right that I finally said to hell with it. I'm not even sure what I did to get it to monitor Linux clients anymore.

I want to say I set the Folding directories up as NFS shares and then mounted them as network drives on the machine with FAHSpy but I'm not sure.

wow that was fast! Thanks for the replies. Apollo I'm not using a Pentium-M 2.13Ghz CPU, which is not dual core. I also just double clicked the FAH file and it started. But it never asked me any config questions. I just went into the config file and changed the basics.(name and Team33). Other than that I'm not sure what to change, but I'll check out the thread you listed. Thanks for the help everyone! Please keep an eye on this thread cuz I'm pretty sure I'll have more questions. But it never asked me any config questions. I just went into the config file and changed the basics.(name and Team33). Sorry for misreading your post about the CPU, it is late. Everything else I and Smoke wrote should be OK. Just disregard the -smp flag. If you simply double clicked on the executable and no terminal window appeared, it will configure itself as a default user with no team. If you create the launcher as I instructed and click on the desktop icon that will subsequently appear, you will see the steps to custom configure your client with the username and team. But, you'll have to delete all the files I mentioned first, which is everything that wasn't in the downloaded archive. If you don't delete and reinstall, your client will continue to run with default settings. Best to reboot before doing anything since it's difficult to stop the client when it's running in the background and invisible.

Doh! Blame it on the lack of coffee

Dunno about Fahmon under linux, never tried this. I use Fahmon on a windows box and set Samba shares on all the linux instances instead.

Its a permissions issue. You can't write to to /usr/local as a regular user. You need to run

sudo make install

Yeah oops , I forgot to mention as far as I know any flavor of Linux requires you to be "root" to write to any folder but your "home/user" folder

Debian or a Debian flavor (Ubuntu, etc) = "sudo whatever command", then enter key, then root password or numbers, then enter. For the others it's generally su, then enter key, type in root password or numbers, then enter again and this brings you to the root command line cursor. Once you're at that cursor you can write, delete, add, subtract or anything else in a Linux system (there is a way to save your password/number thing, but I don't remember)

Oh yeah, you can, and sometimes have to, change the permission of a non /home/usr folder's permissions in order for your program to write to it.

As long as it gets in by the deadline it doesn't matter.

However, is it a regular client, SMP client, GPU client, etc? About the only work units anyone seems to have trouble with deadlines are the SMP work units and that's usually just on processors like Pentium-Ds. Anything based off the Netburst architecture is inefficient and crappy for folding. If that's the machine you have that work unit crunching on, you might want to look into putting a different client on it other than the SMP client unless the work unit it's working on is a 2665. Those things are slow as shit on any machine and if your machine can get them in before the deadline, then you should be fine.

It is currently crunching 2669 (R9, C7, G6)

Guess I'll keep an eye on it. I'm gonna be pissed if i just went thru all this trouble of setting up linux to run SMP and the damn CPU won't keep up with the deadlines.
