i just installed debian 7 on my computer.
how do i set the screen resolution to 1920x1200? now it is at 1600x1200!

it's a little complex, I say that's why (for me) Linux is still not my top 1 os.
 
If it's not in the list, it might be a driver problem. The arch wiki page on xrandr is really useful, and should help you out.

Maybe you should cut your teeth on Ubuntu or Linux Mint? I've had the best "out of the box" zero-configuration Linux experiences with Mint. Your mileage may vary.

Note: I use Debian
 
Linux's complexity will lead you to learn useful skills in other OS's as well.
 
I learned on Debian and honestly am glad I did. Forcing me to use the CLI versus mind numbing GUI's but I understand Ubuntu and variants have their place.
