Linux box for routing/firewall/ftp

For the past few weeks I've been using an old compy as a SmoothWall router and I love it. But I really feel like I'm wasting a lot of computer, so I'm thinking of installing Linspire 5 or Xandros 3 on it. Can anyone reccomend good programs for routing, firewall, and ftp that are not standalone? Or is there a way to run SmoothWall in linux instead of having it use the whole system?

hmmm. Did you try clarkconnect? Its a firewall with intergrated ftp and such.
 
No, but thats not really the direction I want to go. I'd like to be able to run linux gameservers from time to time as well.

Most gameservers like steam and such are console only anyways, unless you want to install a GUI interface to it.

If you want expanded capebility, try a Personal Desktop install of Fedora Core 4 or a install of Mandrake. Fedora Core will make you learn more as you have to set up the iptables scripts yourself, but Mandrake is friendly and easy to use, and connection sharing is as easy as following a wizard.
 
You're kinda missing the point of Smoothwall... It's DESIGNED as a stand alone firewall distrobution of linux. Trying to make it into something it's not designed to be will only erode it security.

Why not run your game server on an inside box and forward the ports?

The more crap you force the Smoothie to run besides Smoothwall, the more issues you're opening yourself up to.
 
Thanks guys. I guess I'll just dig up some old parts and build up an old machine for smoothwall, then throw this box on the network somewhere and port forward for my ftp/games/mail etc. I was really hoping for an all-in-one thing, but you're right, there would be security issues, as well as probably too much load on the machine itself.
