I have an Old THinkpad 600 that i bought here. Its currently running windows 2000 prof. pretty well. My question is whether i should keep going with Microsoft or get better performance with a linux or other operating system. Any suggestions.

Its Specs. 266 mhz processor, 160 mb ram, Windows 2000 Prof., 3.2 GB HD.

That's entirely up to you. If the machine is running well for you now, why mess with it??

You could always take a look at some of the lighter weight Linux distros.. I currently run Zenwalk Linux on my laptop.. a 500m P3 with 256m ram and it runs extremely well... I'm very happy with it... If your up for the change and a bit of a learning curve, you might want to take a look...

with that machine, you're still going to need an older Linux distro because the more current ones are just as CPU-demanding as Windows flavors. One idea for a box like that, if you're into it, is to format and install MS-DOS and then play old DOS abandonware on it. That's what I did with an old lappy I had with similar specs.

I'm pretty sure Zenwalk will run on that machine... as long as it's a P3 class... there is a LiveCD available... could always try it out before installing...

DSL or DSLN.. thye both have a windowd environment, and work really good on low end hardware.

DSL-N is highly extendable without the need to customize The applications in DSL-N were chosen because they are functional, usable, and relatively compact. Unlike DSL, DSL-N has GTK2 applications, that means DSL-N will need more ram and CPU cycles than DSL. To have a pleasant experience, we recommend at least 64MBs and 300MHz

What are you using it for and what of your needs is it not meeting?

That old thinkpad will only be getting used for the limited range of uses to which it is suited. There is no operating system whatsoever you can install which will somehow, magically, overcome the limitations of the hardware and make it a 'better' machine. At best, those limited range of uses might work a weensy, tiny tad quicker.

Avoid a world of hurt and newly introduced problems. Accept and be satisfied with what it is, or else replace the thing with something better!
