Is there an SMP difference between FahCore_a1.exe and FahCore_a2.exe. a1.exe seems to be able to max out all 4 cores at 100% while a2.exe only runs at 60% (average load across the 4 cores).

What gives?

Should I still run 2 instances on quad core systems and 3-4 instances on 8 core systems, or is that no longer necessary?

(BTW, on my 8 core Xeon server one instance of a1.exe and one instance of a2.exe result in about 80% load).
 
An A2 protien should load all your four cores better than an A1 protien.

But as I run my Linux clients inside VM's, All I see is a ~600 PpD increase.

A2 is much more efficient. It loads my VMs much closer to 50% than the A1 cores do. PPD is slightly higher too, especially on the 1920 pointers.
 
On an 8 core, I would run 4 instances. 1 per 2 cores. I'm able to get 1600 PpD out of a notfred's VM out of my lappy (T7500). I don't have access to my Q6600 right now, but I've been getting a lot more with notfred's than with WinSMP.

 
What is this notfred i keep hearing about? (the google says that it is a diskless folding solution).

I am not running anything in VMware and am using Ubuntu 8.

I am mainly looking for a quick way to utalize an 8 core system. We get a lot of new servers here at work and i fold on them while people figure out what they eventually want to run on the systems. As a result, i don't like to spend a lot of time setting up VMware or anything like that.
 
notfred is a diskless folding solution. there are a couple of different actual solutions depending on what you are trying to do.

The easiest is booting to the CD version and backing up to a USB Drive. It is very simple and you can configure it to run 1 SMP per 2 cores and it will automatically run 4 SMP instances and back all 4 of those instances to your USB Drive (or a TFTP Server if it is broadcasting). Quite a few are using it for their headless boxen.

I am running via VMWare as I am also running a GPU2 client and need Windows up and running to do so. I'm not the best person to speak on this topic and others will probably pipe in with more information.

The fastest setup would be to install two SMP clients so that they each use four cores. This isn't the optimum setup for PPD performance but it is the quickest. Just make certain that each client has a different machine ID if they will be installed in the same OS.
